Read this on theWest couple of hours ago, and what struck me was the implication in the headline between size and radioactivity, yet the artical failed to then explain the headline.
Headlines say :
Giant tuna may be radioactive
Victorian fisherman Paul Worsteling lures monster bluefin tuna, suspected of carrying radiation from ****ushima
Nowhere does it say why or who suspects, simpy that a sample will be sent for testing to 'help determine IF fish schools affected by the ****ushima reactor meltdown in Japan have migrated around the world'
I guess one could also suspect that it is capable of singing a duet with Frank Sinatra.
I suspect many fish are tested for many things. Perhaps this one made the paper because it was caught by the host a TV fishing show who had a camera, access to the media and a reason to promote catching a big fish ??
Sure 275 kg is a big fish, butboth kneeling down and the camera angle make it look like 500kg.
Radioactivity is a media beat up, if it was a real risk why would they have eaten it? Everything has a background radiation level, the fish might be radioactive, so what, so was my bowl of porridge this morning.
Southern bluefin that size have been caught before, nothing new.
northern bluefin can get more than twice that size. Somewhere I have a national geographic magazine from the eighties that has pictures of northern bluefin that were farmed in the gulf of Mexico. In excess of 800 kg. The pictures were taken at the Japenese fish market and a fish laying on its side was higher than men standing next to it.
There are people about who would have you believe the ocean is stripped bare of every living thing by evil comercial fishermen. They ignore science and the people who depend on healthy fish stocks to earn a living, prefering instead to soak up the propaganda spread by the criminal organisation "Greenpeace". I imagine they will claim the picture above is photoshopped.
What the hell goes on with that tabloid over there.
It was a total gutter rag when I was over in WA 5 years ago.
Still now huh?
Fallout from japan entering our food supply WORLDWIDE is now a given.
Keep your head in the sand if you wish
But facts are facts whether you acknowledge them or not..
That's a biiig fish. Kinda sad really.
Doubt the fallout from Japan is responsible for it though. It was probably alive when it happened (judging by it's size) and radiation isn't like the movies. Things don't turn super size like the hulk. They just die if there is too much.
And if it wasn't born (which I would think to be unlikely), radiation does do mutations, but being of perfect form but just massive probably wouldn't be likely. Would be more likely to have a munted fin like nemo or something.
And if radiation made it massive, slice me off a piece of that and serve it with some toast. Could use another growth spurt! ![]()
OH Great the recession, rising costs now a giant radioactive tuna that will probably evolve quickly and kick over my shed, TUNZILLA
So the 7mtr , Plus !!!white pointer I had cruise, only 3mtrs away from my boat !!was caused by radiation too?,
In Mandurah last year , I don't think so.
Re; photography...it's a bit like a 50cm snapper I caught once that I held at arms length to make it look about twice the size!![]()
This is on my bucket list, spearing a blue fin.
This one I think was off the Eastern US.
there are guided tours of NZ, where they follow trawlers and long line boats and shoot the passing tuna
