Just in the process of starting my own electrical & air conditioning Company. Starting from humble beginnings, I'm trying to think of unique ways of advertising.
Has anyone tried putting stickers on their sails or other gear, does it work? Has anyone got any cheap but effective ways of getting work? Anyone need a sparky??

Ric Black is your man (wdric over on the kitesurf forums ) he has his business logos on his kite and they have lasted well .he will have the contacts for you.
1) decide who is your target market?
2) what are their fears,frustrations,wants and needs?
3)what will you offer to stand out from the crowd.
4) do you have a biz plan?
5) have you worked out your break even?
Read a book called the EMyth by Michael Gerber before you start.

I cant see how having advertising on your sail would add value to your business.
1. How many people are at the beach when the wind is up?
2. How many would be able to read your sail from over 200 metres away?
3. How many of those people that can read your sail are after electrical or air conditioning services?
4. Of those people think who would have a piece of paper or pen, to write your email or phone number down, whilst at the beach?
Stick to keeping it on your car or van. Unless you are going to accomplish a sailing feat, that would provide TV footage, i cant see how advertising on your sail would ever provide an ROI.

The cost of the labels are relatively cheap considering how long they last, I think they could be Effective as it's not my only means of more to accompany other forms of advertising.I'm just starting something small that I can manage with my other job until things take off and My work load increases.
This isn't my only target market, however I have a lot of respect for other water uses and If I can offer a service where they will receive excellent service, advice and pricing then I'd like to do that.
I agree not many people are going to see the sail on the water and think “**** man where's my pen I need to write that number down” it's more for the other surfer's, sailor's, kiter's and all the other people that enjoy the water. It's a talking point and considering a lot of these come from all walks of life I'm sure one of them Sooner or later might need my services.
Consider how Many times you sail past each other and then Chat on the beach to complete strangers. The guy who Came to concrete our drive way was a kite Surfer I got talking to at Caloundra, the tradie who built me a custom study among other things around the house is a kite surfer from Sandgate I think a little advertising can go a long way.
Logos / advertising on sails tends to make people think that you may be sponsored rather than reading the content as an advert and wanting to make them buy.
IMO you are better spending advertising budget somewhere that people are shopping, i.e. local news paper trade section, school newsletter maybe, supermarket notice boards.
The very best thing you can do for yourself is to sit down and write a business plan. Might sound over the top but without some structure it will take longer to get to where you want to be.

in the last few years Ive started putting smegging big simple signs on the work wagon, aand inevitably every new sign pays for itself within a week , with a nice job.
we rarely get work via ads and avoid leaving cards at the local suppliers, all they seem to get is people who want really tight quotes.
from memory i dont think you can sponsor yourself and get a tax deductions, I wish I could
