Got a new lappy 4 chrisy and put my mcfee on it. So was just look around for a free one some where I could wack on the old one. Any tips.

Apparently it uses a high end AV engine but they can't say who because it would hurt the AV company's market. I think its Sophos which is a great AV but more suited for the large scale market.
I used to be a fan of AVG, both the free and paid versions but now AVG seems to be so bloated and intrusive.
What exactly do people need an antivirus for? No seriously... do you download weird ClickMe4HappyTimes.exe's
I have never used an antivirus and I've never caught anything in 20 years and counting.
AND I do download keygen's, cracks, etc.
Has anybody been infected with a trojan? Or does your AV give you false positives and quarantine stuff you really need?
Now when I dl a keygen I just upload it to VirusTotal.com for a report.
And when I run dodgy sw, I run it on a VM.
Wait... I get it, same folk that go and buy those screen protectors that make their phones screen less sensitive, but will protect their obsolete baby from Edward Scissorhands.

PS: We use ForeFront at work which is the same as MS Security Essentials and it's non intrusive enough.

McAfee has become lazy and slow to keep up. I recently switched to AVAST after several independant recommendations and scouring the web for feedback. No issues to date so I guess thats a thumbs up!
Technically, nobody (including me) can possibly know whether their AV is working or not.
We could have virii and not know, having the wrong AV. Or we could not have been exposed, so we still don't know we have the right one.
It's like saying I have a potion against pink elephants and haven't seen one yet, so it must work.
Therefore for the security criterion, we must rely on reviews and tests, IMO.
The other criteria are not security-related: weight & footprint, removability (nogo with McAfee at least), random usage access - very annoying, overall usage access. For CPU usage, get Process Explorer or Hacker, have a look over time. They're free, little footprint, easy to remove.
Hey Pierrec45, you can remove McAfee, I did it only a week or two ago. The windows on board system wont let you, some other programmes are very resistant to removal as well. You can download a programme for free call Revo uninstaller, they should have called it dirty harry.....

Jut remember its not the computer but the sites you visit. Id just run no anti virus and reinstall a hacked os version of windows. Partition your main hard drive If you dont have multiple and dont store anything on it that can be lost.
If your like most people on the internet bought a computer with a os installed already. you will need to download a installer disk that will burn to a cd.
Problem is when you purchase a computer you have a cd key with no cd.Been there done that !! download a hacked version for free. saves a headache of downloading a legit version of windows.
If your going to buy stuff and give credit card details do it from your work computer as (in my case) IT department. specialists addressing security issues.
Some antiviruses on new computers are a retail gimmick in some instances extremely hard to uninstall on a bought computer.. more trouble than there worth.
mcfee agv (forgot the one) etc some anti virus .. you will need to reinstall just to wipe it clear.
A computer tech put free Avira on our computer, only one I've never had trouble with. very hard to remove all the purchased ones, they delete files that are shared and cause troubles with programs and computer start up. good luck
