Tonight I caved in.
Registered at minecraft.net which appeared legit, weird you have to register just to download and pay but anyway... I was sure I had the official site.
After registration, I got the link to my email which I clicked on and computer froze (does not go to that URL, does not open browser at all)
Now I see malware (stij.exe) ... yay... so is minecraft safe or is it full of crap like that? I assumed it would be safe being so well used by many
Does anyone know a safe download location - especially if I am going to pay for it with credit card

I don't play it but that does look like their site. I would find a technical help email and ask, especially if you paid.

I've got two who are mad for it when they're allowed to use the computers, being a geek, we're running multiple servers for their mates to multiplayer connect to as well now 
The minecraft/mojang site and amazon, who are used for hosting and payments etc are as safe as you can get (never trust ad's that are served to these pages though!).
Head to www.minecraft.net/en-us/download and download the latest launcher released the other day.
The signup process for Minecraft is bloody annoying, and convoluted I agree, but the nerds who wrote this never expected it to get so out of control.
