There is some great material out there, most of us have never read it,
that's an injustice. A lot of people on this forum have knocked around,
and have probably been desperate, disadvantaged and a long way from
home.
The earlier days in the north west spring to mind, Headland, Broome, Derby,
Kunnunurra etc. The two day trip from headland to Broome on the dirt was
an experience, before Sandfire.
I have three early photos of Pt Headland sent to me , I would like to share them
with you. They are excellent photos taken by I don't know who. If you have any of
this area you may like to share, that would be appreciated [ pre 1960 ].
I would also like to post for you a riverting story of the old Nth West, it has
everything and will wett your appetite, Based on an actual happening it is
in the theme of " A Bran Nu Day " and also should be made into a film, called
" The Bambra " from the book of short storys called " The Nor'-Westers " by
Ion L Idriess and publised first in 1954
sorry bout my stuff up, but its a little like
the young mens trip....great story should
be a movie, so tell your mates...
problem was my puter had an issyfit, i know
that you will deal with it.........
I have one other shorter story i would like
to present if you want , Its a Love story
from Darwin, after WW2. We have all been in love
in Darwin,havent we! different authour,
a personal mate of mine....a great factual story too !!!!
Good Story mate. Ion Idriess is one of my favourite authors. Outlaws of The Lieopolds and 40 fathoms deep another 2 great Nor West books.
Cheers
i think these are a couple of pictures of old fremantle, WA im not sure of the date though or that it is fremantle sorry ![]()
Gidday Bluestorm, great old photos,
I'll have a stab at placing a few, some may argue, that;s life
1..for my money, it;s the once called Government Aircraft Factory @ Fishermens
Bend Melbourne an the banks of the Yarra. Lined up on Google Earth it seems to fit.
Later became Holden/GMH factory. Was used
in early days of motor racing and drag racing. I spent some wasted youth there
around 1960, witnessed first 150mph pass at quarter mile and also first Aussie
200mph pass, think Eddy Thomas was victor in both cases on the old airstrip
2... camouflage nets over something like fruit or food production or personal camp
4... maybe the old Submarine base at Fremantle building could hold at least 2 subs
under roof for repair was at Google Earth 30 02 19 77s.....115 45 17 60e. When
it was decided to pull building down 25 year ago I was working for a Jandicott
company who tendered and won to remove all internal fittings so spent a couple of
weeks on site, impressive building that not many people knew the history of, very
interesting. Now site is all condominiums but buildings resembles old shed shape
so maybe in general some interesting war time photos of sensitive government
establishments, thruout Australia camouflaged, maybe exercise to show big wigs
what had been done re war effort, One shows camp in foreground all heavily netted
to stop enemy from seeing , could be big army camp that they had in St Kilda
Melbourne, thanks for sharing.
i attached a diagram drawn by my great great great grandfather. might be another great in there?
it was presented to the authorities who called for ideas to provide water to the colonies. 1870
title is
Diagram
in relation to the
supply of water to the australasian colonies
1870
i believe it was done for central queensland.
i have dropped the resolution, so brief overview is he has a central artesian bore supplying water to storage wells, dams etc.
Gestalt, very interesting , would like to know more ,its not what a lot of people thought too much of in them days
Thommo you have provided me with a couple i know nothing of will try to get to read them, thanks
ok thanks for that insight jmurray, all the old war time facilities that have disapearded are quite interesting
to look back on.
Here is my other story of a Darwin love, If you understand the old
Darwin before "Tracy" after WW2. My friend wrote this of his sister
working in Darwin. who's other sister was a nurse on the "Centur"
torpedoed off Qld coast and only just located. The Darwin sister
tragical died two years ago, and my mate died in 1987. some more
information of him can be found on my website walkaboutjoe.com...........enjoy....![]()
