So which is it?
Sydney: I live in Sydney and it used to be great, but now there's just toooooo many people.
Traffic jams every single day of the year.
Infrastructure is worse than it was 10 years ago and 2 million people less.
It's also too expensive $600-$1000 a week for renting 2 bed'er, 2 bathroom with garage.
Melbourne: I lived there for a little while 10 years ago, never really liked the weather, beaches or city much... rent was cheap (but so was Sydney at the time).
Brisbane: It's built on mud flats! But the people have been really nice every time I've been.
...???
Perth.
- Best climate
- Everything close
- Less than 1hr drive to beach for everyone - most people 20-30mins
- Less than 1hr drive to the bush for mountain biking, motorbike riding, pretty much anything that does not involve the beach is close
- 2 or 3 hr drive max to world class holiday locations
Pitty its so over priced to buy a house and its got no waves.![]()
I hear the city of Rockingham is the most liveable(affordable) city of Perth for the average wage earner.![]()
I thought Adelaide was....or is it case everyone thinks the city they live in is the most liveable.http://designbuildsource.com.au/adelaide-australias-liveable-city

Manly, Sydney NSW, most livable, at $50/week.http://www.realestate.com.au/property-other-nsw-manly-407233081
On the other end of the ledger you can have a choice of 3 lovely properties along The Bower, when you pull out $4 large ones per week.

I read once as the population goes up by a factor of one the services and ammenities that people like goes up by a factor of 1.7. So life in bigger towns becomes better for people.
Having lived on a farm, in a small town, a medium sized town, a small city and now the biggest city in Australia, I'd say that theory is about right. A good holiday I had was spent at home in Sydney. Did what I wanted to do at minimal cost. Travelled by train to different suburbs and saw different things. Went to art galleries and museums. Ate at different types of restaurants. Also went on bushwalks in the bush with swimming at the beach and when it was windy, went windsurfing.
The bad thing about Sydney is moving around, especially at peak hour on the roads. The traffic is abysmal. Also coming back to Sydney after long weekends is a shocker.
People talk about crime and violence in Sydney. I think unless you go looking for a fight or rip off bikies in a drug deal, its a safe place to live. Certainly less crime than in some country towns.
They say real estate is expensive here. It is. However its not that cheap in many regional areas. I honestly can't see the value in $400K houses when the medium income in the area is about $25K a year like it is in Coffs Harbour.
most liveable city???!!
about ten years ago melbourne was ranked at one point second most liveable city in the world (after Vancouver).. i recall even sharing first place at one stage... But that was BULLSH!T!!! Then everyone heard about it and started migrating to Melbourne, and now with 1 million more people it's became an overcrowded nightmare...
If you live in the most liveable city, just keep quiet and don't mention it to anyone!!!! otherwise you are doomed....
RENTING? wtf At that price. People have there priority's ****ed up hey. Rather buy an i phone than save for a new house to beat the rent trap.
Im not even going to be brutally honest here.
The haves and the have-nots.
The have not's seems to be complaining about rent living the dream paying of someones mortgage..How ****en dumb are people.
Want the lifestyle but cant afford it so rent it???????????????????????? gtfoh.
The last 7 years I've lived 6-12 months in:
Auckland
Brisbane
Toowoomba
Adelaide
Canberra
Melbourne
See, "liveable" is totally subjective. And as much as the study aims to define what "liveable" means everyone will have their own opinion. If you have a good group of friends liveable can be anywhere.
Brisbane has (usually) the weather. Sure you melt over 6 weeks during summer, but the rest of the year is somewhere between good and fantastic. Some would say perfect. The city is, now, really very nice. I even it put it on par aesthetically with Melbourne. However if you visit Brisbane expect it to be closed.
Toowoomba if you didn't know is a country town on the top of a mountain peak, which is why the flood was so bizarre. Of course it's boring, we all know that, but it's also very nice. sun is shining and the weather is sweet during Summer, you get frost during winter which doesn't match the palm trees at all. If you ever visit expect to see nothing due to fog.
Adelaide is boring. There, that's out of the way. Adelaide is also the most charming of the cities I've stayed in. The most loveable. And the wine country, wow. You can reach Hahndorf in 25 minutes from the CBD. I went to the Barossa twice, mainly due to a family tie I found in the region (they planted it!). Some bias there. If you go to Adelaide expect to see a festival and a vibrant, pretty city, or an empty pretty city.
Melbourne has the best CBD by far. I've been here 12 months today (exactly) and I've only left it once to go to a dinner party. So I cna't really comment on Melbourne per se. However the city itself has everything you need, whenever. I've no need for a car or even public transport. Want to buy some socks at midnight? No problem. There's a real buzz to the place to as there is always a lot of nightlife going on, restaurants can be packed at 1am on a Monday morning. Bars are top notch. If you go to Melbourne expect to get pleasantly lost in its maze of alleys all weekend.
Canberra is a soulless wasteland. Apologies to people from Canberra but it's true. Canberra is not horrible, and that's part of its lack of soul. Hell is more interesting than purgatory, which is where Canberra is. Everything closes at ten to five. I tried visiting the countryside but it was light brown and featureless, again a desert would be better. Fireworks are banned now. It's the lack of layers built up and over during hundreds of years by all types of people that's missing. Canberra just appeared in the middle-of-nowhere one day. Canberra was designed to look interesting to helicopters, they forgot about the people. If you ever go to Canberra ...just don't.
Auckland I'm throwing in just to say the surrounding countryside is fantastic and the harbour, ignoring the man made parts like that ugly, ugly bridge, actually far surpasses Sydney harbour. It's turquoise and dotted with islands. If you ever go there bring a raincoat.
Sydney - fingers crossed I start next month.
(I'm not mentioning my home town because shhhhh, it's as horrible and touristy as you imagine)
The Lonely Plantet book people had Newcastle in their top 10 cities in the world in last years edition.
I dont live there anymore, I am 1.5 hours drive north, but I grew up in Newcastle. Top surf, easy accessibility for just about anything you need. World class winerys a short drive into the valley. Affordable housing while having a large and diverse employment base.
^^^^^bang on.![]()
Its always funny when the city slickers say they love the city and wouldnt want to be anywhere else.
But every long weekend or holidays they cant wait to get out of the rat race and head rural.
I live 500kms south of perth in a "town" that has 40 thou in the city, probably over 100 thou in the shire. All your main shops, plaza's, take out and the rest. 25min drive in either direction lands you and your 4wd on the beach. Awesome coastline with a cove or beach to suit every wind direction within 40mins. Epic waves everywhere. Fishing top notch, by boat or land. No traffic lights. Work is always only 5mins drive. A traffic jam involves 5 cars and 45 seconds of stop time. A crowded spot means there is another human being there. Easter weekend, when the masses are everywhere, we went for a monster long drive ( hour and a half ) and had a pristine inlet and beach all to ourselves for 3 days, catching salmon and sharks right in front of camp. I even got the kayak a out in the perfect conditions.
All this on my doorstep, i must say, i actually pity all the folks that live in the rat race in the city, travelling 40mins to work, traffic jams, and not an uncrowded beach for miles.
Some people have to live in a city for various reasons.
So one advantage of a 'liveable' city is not having to drive for ever to undertake your hobby/ies
Imagine living in L.A or Tokyo and being into anything requiring open space or bushland.
We are so lucky, but I still say Perth is pick of the bunch. The worst or Australian cities still craps all over anywhere overseas
