If he dives shouldn't you give him a speargun or one of those explosive head stick weapons to kill a shark coming to eat him?

Are they called powerheads or something like that? Powered with a shotgun cartridge or some other massive cartridge. A few sharks get killed like that and they'd soon know who is the boss.

Anyway with GoPro 3s. They are a big jump over the 2. I guess which one you get depends on whether you need the 4K ultra high resolution or the very fast frame rate. If you do you need the expensive one. If not then you could get the cheaper one.

I have a GoPro HD 1 and its a cool little camera.

I just found out this morning that my Wife's getting me a Gopro Hero 3 Black edition for xmas. Can't wait.

If you're going to spend the $$$ the black edition is head and shoulders well above the competition.

look into a dive housing for the go pro

Yes, standard, they are water proof to 60m, but the lenses are not very ideal for shooting underwater due to warping the image. An additional dive housing with a corrective lens isn't too expensive and makes the footage much better.

I've got a Hero2 which is brilliant... but it's not really any good for diving.

Because there is no white balance, everything comes out very blue or green at anything deeper than a couple of meters and the image quality is not very good for some reason (it's excellent in shallow water).

For shallow snorkeling in clear waters it's great, but at 10-14m on the Exmouth Navy Pier it was very disappointing (approx 10m vis).

From youtube searches it appears that modifications are required to the housing, or even the addition of a different lense to ensure that the quality is there.

EDIT - I think you'll need to add one of these http://gopro.com/hd-hero-accessories/dive-housing/

The new Hero 3 does not suffer the 'fish eye' effect. And it's smaller... and I think it may address the white balance issue mentioned in the post above. NB: We have the Hero 2 (and love it), but did see some info on the new v3 on the website my son was salivating over...

I thought if you GoPro you'd be wearing fish nets, high heels and a tight dress.

Buy yourself some hot lingerie and any water proof camera. Suggest you both take some pics together.. he's not gonna care which camera you bought him!

BTW - for general waterproof camera duties I have a Lumix FT2 (now superceded bt FT3/TS3.

Awesome pics above or below the water/snow etc. As a general point and shoot they take some beating but with waterproofing and all the diff modes, white balances (and now full manual modes) I believe they leave Go Pros for dead in general use.

Yeah...I like the Lumix...its been a solid friend for a few years and the whole family uses it.

I managed to wreck 3 GOPROS....I just keep trashing them surfing as they tend to leak even if I clean the seals and re grease and carefully close the housing...but thats probably just me..if there is something that can be wrecked I can do it...I would love to hire myself out as a beta tester cos I can break anything

I have a Canon Video camera and water housing which is my goto underwater camera but it will set you back around $1400. It has not had any problems yet so there is something to be said about GOPRO's not being as good.

Called a "smokie". In WA they're covered by the usual firearms legislation and they must be manufactured by some kind of licensed gunsmith or simular.

gayest thing since sliced bread. I think most attacks from great whites the first thing you know about it is your in it's jaws.

Just do the gopro black and the sexy movie thing. and PM me a few stills because it was my idea

I'm a diver and use a Panasonic lumix fts3 with ikelite housing. takes great shots and hd video, depends on if you want just video or not. have taken this combo beyond 50m with no hassles.
