Wifey has decided that i will be taking her to bali for 25th aniv. so i need to know hwere not to go and some recomendations.
i realized that i could take the opportunity to get beyond rank beginner stage with a windsurfer, or even try some beginners kiting lessons some some locations and recommendations would be nice
stay away from cocktails! Second incident in recent months of people being severley disabled because they are too tight to spring for real piss and put methanol in it instead.
Can't believe their regard for people is so low that they would do this. what a shxthole.
stick to nusa dua, the laguana resort and spa is up there
do day trips to ubud and places to the north or even go for overnighters at some place swank
take a fast boat to the gilies or lombok and get on the mushies
but all in all, bali has reached the tipping point of mostly being an over crowded sh!thole

I did try to get some Kite lessons but in the two weeks I was there it didn't blow harder than about 5 knotts.
I was warned that Bali sucked for kiting.
I hadn't been before and expected the worst and was pleasantly surprised. Will be back next year for sure.
I got some decent surfing just north of Kuta of the beach.
Found some good restaurants that sold ozzie tucker cooked better than we do it here

As Doc says nusa dua is where the kite schools are but as far as staying there its full of over 55s.
Make sure you leave your boogie board bag at home,.. unless you want to extend your stay by ten to twenty years.
Sanur would be a good base to see the sights from. Not as pricey as Nusa Dua and you can still walk around or go to the beach without constantly being hassled to buy stuff like in Kuta. Sanur also has a nice lagoon protected from the surf, unlike the Kuta-Legian-Seminyak side which has large dumping shore break.

If you want a relaxing time away from tourists, touts and beggars forget the beach, go inland.
We've just come back from Penestanen (near Ubud), no vehicle access, bike and motor bike only, plenty of nice villas available.
Ours had it's own pool, (perfect place to sit with your swollen foot up and read a good book).
Exotic tropical surrounds, peace and quiet.
Visit a shop called joger in kuta. Owned by an Indonesian philosopher. Brilliant shop. All the locals know where it is.
Just got bcd last night. Stayed at the Novotel Bali Benoa and it was the best stay my wife or I have had (she's been about 12 times). Much more relaxed than Kuta, Ubud, semanek etc. About 10 great restaurants within 5 or 10 mins walk. Great pool with huge trees that create their own micro climate. Wind blows across the peninsula so a bit milder than some locations. Forget windsurfing, wind is very weak and off shore. Take a SUP and ride the small break.

Been going to bali and indo with ridiculous regularity for well over a decade and have always done the homestay, losmen thing..
Last time was at invitation and got to stay at some pretty ridgydidge places..
The best thing about the novotel was the circus of water activities going on on the harbour...

just got back after doing 2weeks up there staying at sanur. i hired a standup paddleboard from Ripcurl school of surf a couple of times. I ended up doing a few runs on a Neil Pryde course board in 12knts and was a happy man.
the winds are starting to switch to easterly cross shore this time of year in sanur and its a great spot to sail.
it will get around the 17-20kt range on some days. the best time for winds however is july-sept where the winds are westerly onshore.
the ripcurl school of surf is owned/run by a kiwi guy. they have excellent gear [starboard,NP] and dare i say it, the hire and teach kiting for those not skilled in the ways of windsurfing.

you need to take note of the tide times as both nusa dua and sanur get really shallow at low tide. The link has the local tide tables for reference.
