Currently in VIC, if I were to buy a car from NSW and drive it back to VIC to register it, what is the procedure?

Is this right?

1) Check on the RTA database for stolen and written off status
2) Check on REVS for money owing
3) Check on the VICROADS database for stolen and written off status
4) Paperwork showing the person selling the car is the owner.
5) They provide a RWC (NSW) and receipt of sale
6) Transfer of Rego Form (I'm stuck on this one, which one do I fill out, NSW or VIC or both or nothing?)
7) Buy that REVS Certificate to prevent repossession if there is money owning on the vehicle
8) Obtain car back in VIC
9) Get VIC RWC
10) Make an appointment with VICROADS for inspection
11) Get VIC rego and number plates (or provide your own)
12) Hand over NSW plates to VICROADS and get a reciept
13) Mail copy of reciept to RTA to get money back from NSW rego

Anything else I missed? Tried doing a search but mostly the other way around and if there was something it wasn't very detailed

BTW: How do I even insure the car if I decided to drive the car back to VIC?

The owner I'm buying off believes they don't need a RWC to sell the car as it is registered till October.

Any help appreciated!

I did it the other way but what you have sounds about right. The owner is correct in that it doesn't need a RWC as NSW doesn't have that system, if it is rego'd till October then that's fine. On the back of the NSW rego papers is a 'notice of disposal' section, you and the seller need to fill this out and keep the appropriate sections each. As you say get a separate receipt of sale too, and both sign it

When I did it the other way I took out insurance on the car before I actually went to VIC and purchased it using all my current address details but the cars current VIC lic. plate. Once I had then rego'd the car in NSW I called up the insurance company and changed the plate details. Given there is a 7 day grace period on insurance policies if you decided not to purchase the car you can get your money back. I would not drive the car home without insurance, massive risk.

In NSW you are supposed to supply a pink slip (the equivalent of a RWC) when selling a car 'unless both parties agree not to'. It shouldn't matter too much anyway, as you are going to have to visit Vic roads to do the transfer.
