I had a quick read- and it sounds good,
But... do we really want our kids still at home when they are 35 years old?
Or grandads pension being used to keep a whole family afloat while the above mentioned kids do seasonal jobs for cash?
Or the kids expecting a house for a wedding present?

^^^ Yes those are perceived downsides to the concept especially in the context of Australian society where they appear to be "bludging off the older generation".

It is really about community spirit and helping one's self and fellow community members rather than big government handouts.

In the wake of the flood here in Bundaberg there are some pretty shocking things going on in the name of "recovery".

Many many people who received the immediate "$1,000 assistance handout", took it straight to the pub and blew it on grog and poker machines.

People in emergency accommodation had meals supplied by one of the leading caterers in town, turned them down saying they weren't good enough. I suppose KFC or Maccas would have been acceptable.

One of the worst things happening is that a host of out of town contractors have been brought in to do recovery work with our local contractors not even getting a look in.

The cost is twice as high what with food and accommodation supplied and the bulk of the money leaves town.

Mostly people are quite capable of solving their own problems and are happier doing that rather than having outsiders do it for them.

If nothing else it would take 25-45% of people (wild guess!) out of the property ownership / rental market, and even at the lower end that surely would help affordability.

Downside - you have to put up with your parents...

Thanks for your concern.

The town is mostly functioning normally now but many are still suffering. eg cafes, restaurants and hotels that are not open for business because the gas lines are fractured and or leaking. That is just one example.

Most people are quite positive in outlook but this was the biggest one so far and I am sure there will be very long term effects.

North Bundaberg (ie on the north side of the river) copped it really bad because much of the residential area is flood plain. However, North Bundaberg people are very staunch and would not live anywhere else. I have some very good mates over there.

Had a grog with a couple of them tonight and they will rebuild their businesses and lives regardless.

There!! Fixed it for ya!!

My kids are welcome at my home anytime as long as they follow the house rules.

Rule Number One:- Once you have a job and are making a quid, you don't live with us anymore.

No. Seriously, I left the family nest, then came back when times were tough, then got out as soon as I could for the sake of my own sanity.

I think "Campanilismo" is reasonably alive and well in Aus. A lot of Henry Lawson's writings embodied it. Australians seem to a fairly gregarious lot as exampled by posts on this forum when a member expresses their misfortune.

Keep on truckin' !!

In my experience those who get ahead usually get a lot of family support. It can be in the form of helping your kids to get a job, giving them somewhere to live, or if you are a member of the right faction of the NSW ALP, use the state and your power as an overlord to enrich your family and yourself at the expense of working families.

How this wealth arrives becomes a matter of luck and mystery after the fact.

I hear that being a Health Services Union Official can really boost one's financial situation these days.

Funny thing is, after all that money passing through his hands as a union boss and parliamentarian, he is basically broke. Most people get by and somehow get ahead on a quarter or less of that sort of money.
