Has anyone had any experience with these or bought one? I am after an aftermarket one as I have just put a checker-plate aluminium canopy with canvas zip up sides on my ute and dont want to cut windows etc into the canopy or canvas there seems to be a huge variety on ebay but I dont know anyone that has got one any info appreciated

Run a piece of dowel from just behind the rear canopy, through a hole in rear of cab, to just behind the driver's seat.
You just reverse up until the dowel pokes u in the back of the head.
Yes I bought a reversing camera for my campervan about 3 years ago after I accidentally reversed into a few pine poles in various parking areas.
It's a Swann 2.4" LCD reversing cam and it looks real good.
So far it hasn't made any difference at all! 
I might try installing it and see if that makes any difference. 
Because we are required to fit these to earthmoving machines on a regular basis, I get good feed back. The ones that the crew like, are those that are not reverse camera's but rear view all the time. Reverse type take some getting used too in regards to actual, versus perceived screen view distance. They only come on while you have reverse selected, thus the issue of getting used to whats actual and what isn't. I agree with pweedas, this is one of the downfalls he has suffered first hand.

The wife's car has the "beeper" system, and she still hit something whilst talking on the phone. The beeper system has a habit of warning you that you are reversing onto roll over gutter... So you learn to ignore it.... (not good!).
But my mate has Factory in a Subaru. First time driving, his 3 year old girl say, "what's that toilet on the dashboard". Construction site over the road, with a toilet out the front!
I got a new car with a reversing camera. It was factory fitted so I can't comment on after market ones.
I quite like it. Way better than sensors that constantly scream at you when you are still feet away from anything.
I still look around and all that but it's an extra thing to look at and it covers an area that I could not see before.
It takes a little bit of learning to calibrate what you are seeing. Mine has red/green/yellow guide lines and they are quite helpful for range estimating. They're also good for lining up the kerb in reverse parking.
It's a bugger if it gets wet or dirty.
A quick google shows that people are pushing for them to be compulsory on new cars.
There are so many different manufacturers of these reverse cameras, and all offer different features, angle of view, screen size, low and bright light operation etc etc.
A couple of the better brands would be Polaris or Swann.
Try to find an auto electrician in your area who fits these aftermarket products and discuss with them your vehicle type and expectations. If you do find and auto electrician who can help (not all of them fit all types of accessories) I suggest you purchase the product from them rather than from the internet as they normally do a supplied and fitted package price which will probably be cheaper in the long run. Not all auto electricians like to fit another suppliers product due to warranty issues that may arise, some may even decline the offer to fit products purchased from an outside source such as ebay as the quality of the product can not be ensured.
ive got a hilux 4x4 stock thing with a tarp without windows. no camera, but do the hang out the door thing well . ive also learnt to use the shop window reflections to my advantage.
I was thinking of getting one for the missus, but it won't work.
Her problem is different: it's more like she's sitting in the car in the parking lot,
doing nothing. Then all of a sudden, a pole runs into the back of the car, right then and there.
Is there a product (car-wise, I mean) for this kind of occurrence ?
Exactly guys, these thing are an aid only and should not be solely relied on. Reverse cameras, reverse sensors, front sensors do not replace the need for you look properly at your surroundings, I have seen people back in to other vehicles even with these items fitted, they are not fool proof.
wifes new honda has reverse sensors ,but if the object behind you has a gap to the ground of about 300mm then it wont sense it.....
like the back of my work trailer parked on the street..........

I have one on my Honda Ridgeline and find that the distortion and the wide angle make it dificult to tell where things really are located. The back up camera on my Acura has guide lines built in which really helps and makes it actually very useful. The camera on the Ridgeline is great for hooking up the trailer.
I have a very efficient reversing detector fitted to my landcruiser. The towbar hitch. Put a band of duct tape around the edge which is then removable so that no foreign paint traces can be found. This gives a solid warning at about 0.25mm distance from the other object.
Can you get ones that can be panned up remotely, so you can check out the hot chick behind you at the lights?
i bought a ccd and a cmos to try from china and also a mirror monitor (7 inch) and hooked it up to reversing lights but also with a manual override. is awesome but I just use to look into to verify nothing behind and then use the mirrors. If you try and reverse using the vision you can miss stuff to the sides or be fooled by depth (although the cmos has graphic lines to aid -I back on to my trailer now first time every time)
Because I have two I use the ccd as a side view to see if cars are coming up from up the street when I am reversing out of a carpark (big blind ute box on back)
My advise is not to go wireless.Definately go hard wired. I often have to fit reverse cameras and all I can say is buy something local. Have fitted many different brands customers have bought off the net and I must say most of them have been nothing but trouble. Cameras tend to fog or the screens are grainy due to poor quality. Poron is about the best of the locally available products. Forget about reverse sensors as people tend to become complacent about them over time.

Thanks for all the info and laughs I have purchased a Gater camera from Repco 12 mnths warranty it will do the job have also installed dowel as back up but it will be situated behind my missus head when she yells ouch I will know to stop thanx Mark
