Waves between two and three metres high are expected to lash the NSW coast at the weekend - days after five rock fishermen lost their lives on the Central Coast.

Surf Life Saving NSW is urging swimmers and surfers to be extremely careful as dangerous surf is expected to hit most beaches from Friday.

"Sea conditions are expected to peak on Saturday, with 6-8 foot-plus waves (2-3 metres) expected to hit most of the NSW coast," it said in a statement.

"The large waves may create dangerous conditions for swimmers and numerous rips and strong currents are expected to form."

A strong southerly swell is building as it moves across the Tasman, SLS NSW says, and at a time of the year when most beaches are not patrolled.

People are advised only to swim at beaches still patrolled by lifesavers.

On Sunday, three men and two women were washed off the rocks while fishing at Flat Rock, Catherine Hill Bay, on the Central Coast.

Four bodies have been pulled from the water and the remaining missing woman is presumed dead.

"Rock fishing is inherently dangerous but large, unpredictable surf conditions make it particularly treacherous," SLS NSW says.
"Make sure you wear a life jacket or, even better, give it a miss altogether (this weekend)."
