Though I would start this thread- See if Im the only one annoyed the Department of Enviroment and Conservation (D.E.C.) in Jurien, are going to let a 22m whale rot at my favorite surf spot.
Yip say good bye to wedge for a year or two or say good bye to a leg.. or two. This thing is huge and will take at least a year to break down. Its 3m high, 22m long its a Blue whale (the biggest of the whales) and is beached bang on the point at wedge. Its going to bring every big fish that gets a whiff of it for miles. I remember last year a 4m white pointer they were tracking behind rottnest took a 90 deg turn and swam 18km dead straight to a floating whale at sorrento. Before it finally beached its self there were 3 or 4 big sharks chewing on it.
Apparantly they dont have the money and not enough people have complained about it, so they think they will leave it.

Last weekend I was doing a little thinking....
The local cray fisherman should tow the whale out beyond the reef and charge people/tourists to watch the sharks nibble at it.
If it was physically possible to move the whale back into the water with a couple of front end loaders then everyone would win. The whale gets eaten within a month, cray fisherman get some extra coin and interested people get to see sharks munching a whale up close while drinking a beer on the deck of a cray boat.
That is one massive whale...

It's funny how they have chossen to leave it there. It would not be the same story if it washed up at Cott beach.
Good Idea, I asked George in Jurien about that, apparantly they cant tow it, they would need a tug or something big, also would have to spear it with air.
Or - the army could use it for target practice. They could tow it right out the front of the bombing range and blow the f out of it.
On a serious note why dont they bury it in the dunes. Thats what they did in mindarie last December.
Leave the thing , why does every do gooder think some sort of human intervention is needed. The coastal creatures need replenishment, like a good dose of fertiliser.
Now get on your surf board and learn to enjoy the smell of the roses / dead whale.

I am very surprised at peoples response to Stu's expression of interest to have the whale removed. People will venture out into the water, people will be eaten by sharks..... if it is not removed! Do you rememer that movie called Jaws, kind of like that. The sharks are there, they wait patiently for you to tread water, then they come up and eat. Do you understand me!
How do you move it? It would be a massive job. Also the said person that scored the job would have to have no sence of smell, far out it must stink! But as said in earler posts if it happened @ Cott it wouldnt be there now. But its at Wedge and its gonna stay cos nobody really gives a crap about the beach up there cos no tourists go there.
A couple of points re comments above.
They can move then whale, and probably best done before it breaks down. Your right in thinking it might have to be cut in half. So be it. But a front end loader could easily take care of the towing and digging.
Pretty soon the skin on the whale will break or it will explode will all the gas building inside and then it will really stink. The people of Wedge (some 200 or more people) who live there will have to live in this stink for many many months. I know Phil was dry reaching when he copt a wiff of the whale in cot and he was 200m away. This whale is probably 100m away for the houses in wedge and in a direct WSW air direction. So all those disease covered flies will be landing on their food and faces. Not very healthy.
There are a lot of tourist going there every week end. In-fact there are move tourist and day trippers to wedge than people living there truth be known probably even double.
To the wierdo or saying leave it and suggesting its tampering with nature. Your obviously ignorant to the health implications and duty of care implications to the public. This is not a deserted beach, people live here and visit everyday. Its the equivalant to a dead whale at coronation beach, you cant really sugest leaving a whale at corros? Im sure all the people of wedge will let you take the whale and dump it out the front of your house.
Im waiting on some more news from D.E.C. so wil keep you posted.

I would hardly rate Wedge Island and the location of this dead animal as being a health hazard in the middle of winter for mass tourism and for those who live in the area.
In fact locals love this sort of stuff because it gives you and excuse to get of the couch and go and have a look every second day.
I BET you... this next storm it breakes up, or it becomes fully burried anyway and for the sea creatures and the environment for gods sake give me a break.

Doggie, its a mission alright. Apparantly some of the guys in Jurien are willing to help cut it. I agree its there to stay for a while. It was a 5m swell that dumped it in its current position and there aint a lot storms this size very often.
The question Ive got - How much weight can a front end loader tow?
I say, I didn't realise that the outdoors would be so smelly. Maybe we should have stayed in Claremont for the weekend?

why not cut it up and melt it down for the oil? you can run clarified whale oil as an alternative to Diesel. Do you realize that you could run a large deisel for a long time on this baby. As you boil the blubber off ,the scraps of skin/innards are taken from the trypot and added to the fire to fuel the boiling down . In essence you burn the waste to extract the oil. after boiling the equipment is scrubbed down using the ash from the fire, which is the only effective way of getting rid of the smell.
Its not as if your heading out to sea with Harpoons to chase it down, its already washed up. the balleen from its mouth is excellent for making cray pots and theres plenty of it( nobody wants it for dress hoops anymore )
I cant believe how we waste all the washed up whales these days. If it was a cow that died we would grind it down for fertilizer without a thought

if not for a solid wind i would not have been able to stand like this. walking downwind to retrieve a rib bone i was hit by a wall of smell that was like being next to a speaker at a kiss concert, it smashed my senses and stupified my brain, since then anything dead and rotting smells like hundreds of kilos of rotting whale......enjoy!

This is true, Jaws was not a true representation of the true nature of the 'Great White' shark. However, I am going to say something which may enlighten you a bit.
Scenario: You are on a boating expedition with 10 Marine Biologists. Swimming around the boat is a number of Sharks, namely the 'Great White.' An argument breaks-out during a converation you are having with the Bios. The topic of conversation being "What is the true nature of sharks, namely the 'Great White?" You say that "they are very misunderstood, they are not as dangerous as made out to be!!!" In reply, the Marine Biologists say "jump in and prove it!?".
What are you going to say to them???
Wedge Island is a favourite playground for many people, younge and old. Sure, we could leave the whale where it is to rot & decompose, & we could see someone go missing off the coast from that area in the next 6-8 months. What will people say about the whale then?
What about setting fire to it? Surely all that whale fat would burn for days reducing the thing to ash.
