Rockingham is attractive suburb given the lifestyle and housing cost. But I have heard lot of bogans and related trouble there. Still some people I know, who are definately NOT bogans say they are very happy in Rockingham. So please tell which areas of Rockingham are undesirable & bogan culture prevails and which areas are good for families specially kids.
I live in a Bogan Hotspot, but am 900m from the beach. ![]()
The price i pay for affordable 1st home i guess. ![]()

You may live on the waterfront which is great but it is still close for the kids of the bogans to burgle your house. And you still have to go to the same shops etc as them
OK house pricing and close to water vs proximity to d!ckheads is a call only you can make ![]()
We've always enjoyed visiting the TCYC each November for the Roland Smith / Gordon Craig offshore sailing weekends....
Younger crew enjoy Liquids & Zeldas...... ![]()
Poods
Best place to bring up a kid. Loved growing up there and if i could do it all again i would.
I live south of the heart land (its a secret
) but still apart of the shire.
After school trecks to 'the bomby' (locals will know what im on about)
Swimming out to 'Dunga island'
Partys at 4th car park
'Condom' fights at the 'Muddys' Yes sounds sic but its not what ya think. Bay kids in the 80's will know that one.
Friday night basketball then hangin out the front of the hot house with the crew watchin netball ![]()
Stay the f out of Coolingup, East Waikiki or any where the non ocean side of Read st. Got told that by a realestate agent when i went to by my 1st place, and its good advice to the kids as well if they plan on knockin about at night.
Hi Guys
Cant help with your question about bogan, non bogan areas sorry but do have a "rocco" bogan story.
Rocco bogans seem to be the most passioante of the bogan breed. Worked with one underground. Had a yarn with him at the pub one night and somehow thought I was interested in tatoos so started showing me his portfolio.
He was so impressed with the Rockingham postcode tattooed in celtic numbers down his forearm that he swore when his young fella was old enough he too would go to the tattooist and have the postcode etched into his arm.
He told me that hes started a family tradition and every boy in generations to come will be expected to get the tatoo!
Awesome Stuff!!
Desirable = outside Rockingham (until you reach SA or beyond that is)
Undesirable = inside Rockingham. ![]()

Here we go again...
The bogan **** is true in a sense but hardly a deal breaker. You have to realise the locality. Rocko is close to the Industrial strip from the freo boats yards to the grain terminal and kwinana strip, which means there is a good percentage of 'blue collar' workers\families...
As for bogan related trouble...whatever... crime is crime regardless of the demographic...we have no more or less than any other suburb in percentage terms.
You have to remember we're a 'city' of approx 100,000 people at any one time. **** is going to happen...its no different to any other suburb.
Definitely Cooloongup, East Waikiki, Hillman, Woodbridge have a bulk percentage of government housing. Even a percentage in Port Kennedy. If you can find a good house with a pool and big shed for a good price it shouldn't deter you. I guess it depends on what you're looking for.
Stay away from Hillman for sure but.
Secret Harbour is also a nice area quite a clicky community vibe going on as well. Full of families, poms, cashed up bogans and FIFO wives. Not mentioning the scallys tagging and breaking **** all the time.
Warnbro on the east side of Read St... I think there are a few gov houses in there as well.
Warnbro\Shoalwater is nice, but even still parts of that have some pretty rough characters. Alot of retirees.
Old Rockingham is the same...expensive.
Anchorage is one of the newest estates its nice just very condensed.
Harrington Waters... nice again also one of the newest...
Waikiki\Charthouse (where I am) well kept, plenty of families about. (bar a few houses) It's basically the middle of rockingham in a sense.
You also have Baldivis\Settlers nice big houses, pretty condensed, families, cashed up bogans. A bit of a way from the city centre of rocko. But now does have its own woolies.
Saying this I have a colleague who is moving out of Baldivis Central because of trouble related happenings.
People live here for the coastal lifestyle and dont really give a **** about the bogan percentage.
This is only my view though...
I don't live in Rockingham, so I can give a semi-accurate account of the population given that I have not become acustomed to it.
Based on drive throughs of the area and shopping in the areas surrounding, some places really are full of:
MEATAXES, absolute meataxes mate.
Through and through bogans and meataxes.
Not all, but a significantly higher percentage of these... Don't look at kwinana either!
The bogan activity in the rocko area is on a street by street basis, I have a house in a quiet little cul de sac in Cooloongup and could not be happier 5 minutes to Safety Bay and 15 to work, only 1 rental house on the whole street and one lot of cashed up bogans who apart from the 20 cars they try to park on the front lawn cause no trouble or noise, and the meth lab was shut down by the cops 2 years ago.
Baldivis as bad as Kwinana in just a few years plus it is stinking hot out there.
If you go to move here check out the state of the whole street and approach streets before comitting. A house with an unkept yard or house with more than 2 cars is a sure sign of bogan activity plus watch out for burnout marks
^^^ V. good advice for any house purchase - and don't forget to evaluate the neighbours over the back fence in the process.
... and watch out for barking dogs - god that ****** me. Just more selfish inconsiderate behaviour, whatever label you care to put on the owner.
OK, so here goes. Lived down in Rockingham for 3 years and spent loads of time walking, cycling , padddling and sailing so have seen most parts in an in depth manner.
Geographically the place is awesome if you're into water sports and deserted beaches. For a metroish(thanks to the trainline) location with access to awesome water\beaches it has to be one of the best spots.
My Jack Russel swears by the place. Never has there been a happier pooch tearing up the beaches at Shoalwater at 5 am in the summer mornings.
Things start going pear shaped when you look at the behaviour of the locals. It really is a lottery as to who you end up living near. Yes housing is affordable and you get loads of space compared to closer to the city but that all means nothing if you have some retarded **ckwits living next door to you.
The older folk are mostly pretty decent and care about the place but they really are dying out and being replaced by a generation of overbreeding losers. Maybe a harsh generalization and there are some good functional folk down there but jeepers it all gets means very little when you are constantly faced with the actions of antisocial twits.
I've moved away as overall I don't feel the area is a positive place(although it definitely has some great parts and I miss the sailing). Have moved to an area closer to the city and have really not felt threatend or unsafe where I am now.
There are better parts to Rockingham and they are priced accordingly.
Personally don't see much point to Baldivis and definitely stay west of Read Road.
Good luck with your decision and I really reckon you should rent down there to get a good feel for the place if thats where you are drawn. Loads of rentals around so you won't battle and any property value increase was priced into the area when teh railway was still being built, so you don't have to be in any rush to buy anything.
From what I've seen of Perth you can definitely do worse than Rockingham and if you are willing to deal with its rough edges I reckon you could make yourself a decent life down there.
Pooman, can you tell me how I get a FIFO wife? Sounds cool ![]()
[/quote
I got me one of those ,and she was raised, like me in Rockingham(6168)
they get really grunpy when the fly back in ,your late at the airport to pick em up,theyve got a headache from the flight, dont feel like eating at the moment , and barely notice that youve spent the last 2 hrs cleaning the whole house, and got ALL the washing done in a single day, hence the pile of cleans on the sofa
It will change and the social commentators will find another area that they can call bogan and look down their noses at. Rocko is just like any other area - good and bad.
I grew up in Mosman Park where there were areas that were every bit as "bogan" as Rocko is now. But you wouldn't think so now since the Pub and TAB went and a few street names were changed. Few bits defiantly remain - like the Garlok Chinese restaurant.
I reckon you could find alot worse, but like others have said - check out your neighbours.
looking at the map i rekon i would be steering well clear of a place called "wellard" unless of course you are, well hard or the dog from eastenders(why do i remember that ****)
