Me and the missus are heading over to WA for a bit of a look around. We're flying to Perth the jumping into a small rental car then doing a bit of a circuit, through Mandurah, the Capes, Margaret River, D'Entrecasteaux NP, Albany and back to Perth. We'll base ourselves somewhere nice in each area and go for walks, look at the scenery, eat, drink coffee etc. We'll be staying in motels, BnB, etc.
Can you recommend any particularly nice places to stay in that area? I'm thinking towns to base ourselves in for 2-3 days at a time.

There's so many good accom places in all of those towns...
What we tend to do once we find somewhere that looks interesting is to find reviews on Trip Advisor and look at 'user' photos etc to be sure that we are not being fooled by glossy touched-up pics. Nothing worse that planning a weekend away only to find the accom you booked is far below expectations...
Make sure you get off the main roads,and take some of the more scenic backroads.

We are looking at motel, BnB accommodation ie. one that supplies the bedding and towels and stuff. It should be "nice" without being over the top. Funky is ok. Grotty not so ok. Quiet is important. The other half is terrified of spiders so something with a minor gloss of civilisation is preferred.
A spectacular location is more important than swish furnishings. En suites are better than having to walk to conveniences but we're not wusses.
A walk to a restaurant or cafe is nice. Birds and nature and views and a pleasant environment are more important.
As for budget, we're $100-150 a night kind of people. If it costs more then that's ok. We saw a place at Eagle Bay for $180 a night and thought that was ok, when compared to the other places at $400 a night.
We'll be travelling in a Toyota Corolla with basic airline type baggage, and it's only for 8 days so we won't be in a position to self-cater or camp or any of that stuff.
Down South is more of a summer time trip. December to March around Denmark, Albany, Mt Barker & Porongurup Nat park, Stirling Ranges, etc is just choice-bro. Although a lot of it is not much different from country-victoria.
Winter time is ball freezing cold, although from Victoria you might just feel right at home. 
For winter time in the west you really should hire a campervan and head up north. Anywhere north of Geraldton is good. Exmouth to Broome is great. 
Karijini and the Hamersleys are great 
and all different to Victoria.

Yeah, well you don't have to look at all of it. 
And anyway, there's a bypass road around Port Hedland.
You are right though. There's a lot of driving between the good bits, but I even like the nothingness as a break from metropolitan areas. Just get out in the middle of it and soak it up. A thousand kilometers from anything has a definite feel about it. You can hear and feel it almost untouched from prehistoric times.
And yes I know. It's probably an aquired taste,.. like blue cheese.

We've already been to Perth and a little way north, and we've fairly frequently been "in the middle of nowhere". We intend to do a longer trip and bring all the toys. At the moment bringing paraglider, kiteboarding, surfing gear is a bit prohibitive.
Anyway, this trip is just 8 days in a Toyota Corolla heading south from Perth. We like dramatic weather and compared to Vic I expect WA to be quite mild. I won't be doing any surfing or diving etc but I might get the mini-paraglider out if the weather and the sites co-operate.
