I've always avoided using ear plugs as they always seemed to be more of a hassle than a help. A recent spate of ear infections has kept me out of the water, so mabe it's time to rethink my illogic.
Any recommendations for types/brands/alternatives would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance![]()
I tried using proplugs for surfing, but they trapped the water in my ear, rather than stopping it getting in.

They seem pretty popular though, so maybe I'm not fitting them correctly. You can buy them from Murray Smith.
+1 on the blutak
it is awesome.
make a cone sorta shape, bung it in and smear the outside around so it matches your ear shape exactly. no water in for hours and hours.
I know that a lot of threads turn funny/ridiculous and I reckon that is great, soooooo, is this for real about blutack? cos earplugs arent all that cheap and I can never get them to stay in. Cheers
I have a bad ear and the ear specialist recommended blutack. Used it for over 20 years and never had a problem. So another vote for blutack
i had a big stack on wednesday,
went nose first on the landing and hit the water ear first after catapult. it hurt quite a bit.
i thought about this thread straight away and wondered what danger there would have been of the blutak getting lodged right up my ear?
When I use it at least I shape the plug into a sort of roundish wedge. Its pretty unlikely blutack of that shape could be pushed up the ear canal from an impact and if it was there is a fair chance you would have a burst eardrum without the blutack.
