Ok, this is the thing...i am natural footer when i am surfing and a goofy when i am skating or snowboarding... the problem i have is that my surfing is not improving as much as i would like to because when i am surfing i always get up using my knee on the board, it is weird, you see it you couldn't believe it how i do it, it is a habit i had for a long time. I have been trying everything to get rid off the habit, at home and on the beach standing up on my surfboard and i had some couch lessons to try to fix it as well with no much luck. I even try to switch foot when i surf and i did got to my foot no using the knee but i fall off straight away, can't surf.... Anyone has any tips or a piece of advice?
Cheers guy's.
I recon how you get up is irrelevant, as much as whether you can stay up.
Maybe try hand stands
Otherwise get a knee board![]()
In your lounge room (or somewhere where no one can see you)...
Get into the push-up / 100m sprint position and practice springing to your feet as fast as you can... as there is no board or instability to deal with you will not need the 'in between' step of using your knee...
Repeat daily - whether going for a surf or not.
Yes. What GPA said.
It's probably putting your knee on the board that is making you stand up wrong foot forwards.
All the time that you have a knee on the board, the board is unstable and you crouch there waiting for everything to get stable before you stagger to your feet.
By that time the best part of the wave is probably gone.
The trick is to go from lying on the board paddling to crouching on both feet in one flick up.
Put your hands on the side of the board as though you are about to do a push up and then snap up to your feet in one fast snap move with one foot forwards of the other but still crouched down.
You can then go to the stand up position as the board drops away under you on the wave.
You can practice this on the floor or out on the grass.
Thanks guy's I have been doing those exercises a bit probably I should do them more....
The thing is for those who didn't got the point, the standing up technic I have, it is shocking, once I stand up I can surf well I can actually ride the waves but the standing up technic is the reason why I cannot improve my surfing. I notice that when I surf decent size surf around 2 to 3ft max. i do it so quickly maybe because the face of the way, the speed, but I hardly notice my knee. In the other hand when i surf small waves is when i notice it a lot it does bother me, I try with a longboard and the same thing. Anyway thanks to those with constructive comment, appreciated ![]()
Anyway I wanted to comment about SUPS because last week I was surfing Grunters
and we were having such a good surf until a couple of SUPS come along and litterally stole every single wave. I got the ****s so much they should know that you cannot arrived to a spot and take over, show some respect for other surfers!!! They completly ruined the fun ![]()
practice practice practice........
also try taking 1 more stroke as you paddle in. the drop should help the board drop away easier letting you swing your knees through freely.
take some time on youtube to watch how good surfers take off. youll see that its rarely in a straight line to the beach and and they stand up as the board drops down the face. also the board isnt lying flat but rather pointing "downhill".
a 7ft board at 58 kg is going to get you into the wave early and stop all the above from happening so if you can ballacne on your feet, now is the time to ditch the big board, and stick to the 6'6".
