Yeah, I agree, so do mine. Apparently on theirs the diff drives each side separately

I can't think of how they would arrange it so that only the right side was powered while leaving the left hand side stationary.

They just needed to disable the right hand brakes. With brakes applied the LH wheels then stop and differential action spins the right side at twice the speed. First gear would feel like 2nd gear. They should have used light weight space-saver spares. Those 4wd wheels are heavy things to handle.
