Nor, in his wildest dreams, could he have predicted that this internet shop would be supported by a handful of bricks and mortar "concept" stores - soon to be opened in capital cities across Australia - where customers can try clothes before going home to buy them online.

I don't know if the online sales will be offshore or not, but if they are then this is the end game of the current $1,000 GST/duty threshold.
That didn't take long.
Good on the Gowty's for moving their 'FLetcher Jones' business model with the times in order to compete. The alternative would be to die a slow death all the while complaining how "the internet is ruining our business".
It's basically the only idea left standing, weird that the Govt wants to do it that way.

The above concept was raised at a Payments Innovation Event I attended last week. The speaker was a guy from MasterCard and he said it was becoming increasingly popular in the UK. Some labels still retain a store or two with a minimal space to keep costs down where customers can see the clothes and try them on in person before buying them online or with their smartphone and having them delivered to wherever they want.
Only downside was that it didnt cater for the impulse buyers or those that are impatient. One label circumvented this by actually restocking some concept stores with popular stock and sizes and providing same day delivery for metro areas.
A case was discussed where a women attending a wedding spied someone she disliked wearing the same dress, after the church ceremony went online purchased another dress and it was delivered within the hour. the quickest turnaround time for the label from purchase to delivery so far is apparently 18 minutes.
It's actually mind-boggling how far technology has progressed over the last 12 months and what is upcoming in respect to consumer payments. It has made my job exciting at least.
I think it is a good thing, instead of complaining, get on board. Seems those who whinge the most, like Harvey Norman, are the best placed to open an online store due to their massive resources.
The irony is after they do this, when all the stores have no stock.... in 10yrs somebody will start opening stores with stock and people will flock to it - such a novel idea - "ooh ooh look, no waiting you can have it now"

It's a great concept, but why subsidise the big overseas stores or the big players who like you say are best placed for something like this.
Hmm... Fletcher Jones are the third best on Bourke street and the three hundredth best online.. Interesting to see what will happen
