Hi Laurie

A few improvements changes to the forum: (is that better?)

- List all unread posts view. List all the posts you have not read in forum, topic, date order. Serve them up in pages. Have buttons for "go to to next button page", "mark read and go to next page" and "mark all read". Needs a long form and a short form. Link to the posts so we can see the full text and the pictures and stuff.

- Ignore forum, topic. List the threads and topics and allows us to set flags to exclude them from the all unread posts list.

- Ignore user. So we can filter out the regular trolls and thread bashers and clowns. When viewing a user's profile give us a button to click to ignore all posts from that user. Show the list in our own profile and we can remove people from the ignore list.

- Search to offer choice of posts or topics. When searching for something you really want to see the posts not topics that have your search words buried in several pages of stuff.

- Ads page. Sometimes I glimpse a banner ad but it disappears before I can click on it and it takes heaps of random clicking before it reappears. Give us a page with all the banner ads so we can see them at once ... if we want to.

These features are on other forums I look at and make browsing easier and lets us filter out stuff we don't want.

Don't know about all that stuff,

but while we're on it, two things i'd include are;
a top ten posts button, where you can see the best posts in the last couple of days. (ranked by green thumbs i guess)

And i'm still campaigning to have Darwin's red arrows changed to green beer bottles

Other forums have that as well as your own post ranked by popularity.

I deliberatley left out the red/green thumb thing but seeing I got a bunch of red thumbs from this, other forums list the number of red/green thumbs received by post and by user. If the user gets too many red thumbs they get automatically sin-binned for a few days.

I'm wondering what it is about this post that caused some red thumbery? I would have thought Laurie would be the one most affected because it would take some work and expense to implement stuff. Maybe the trolls don't want to be ignored.

This would have the same effect as removing thumbs. The attraction is in the anonymity.

Bad idea. I wouldn't be able to post on the SUP forum any more . Seriously though, OG SUP would be permanently sin-binned too, and anyone else that some mysterious red-thumber decided to campaign against.

Filtering sounds like a good idea, filter out the freaks - trouble is there would be nothing left to laugh at and there would be no one to feel sorry for[}:)]

Hi Laurie

- List all unread posts view.

I think it does this to an extent - purple indicates new posts yellow folder indictes nothing new. The last post time also indicates when the last post was.

- Ignore forum,
- Ignore user.

Don't like this you can pretty much be your own judge of what you want and don't want to read IMO

- Search

I agree search sucks. However th google thing helps a bit but search needs development

- Ads page.

Search SUX @rse like a vacuum at a gerbil owners club late night get together. Worse than that even it's like someone spiked the punch.

Have you tried the "active topics" link at the top of the forums page?
Lists all the topics you haven't read since the last time you logged in.

Having a dedicated 'My posts' tab in the drop downs to follow up on threads/questions etc.

Dunno if all know this but at the mo you have to click your own avatar to see your own profile and then click "view [your own name] posts"

this...

This feature is on some other forums I frequent and it's gold

another great one:

when you hover over a thread name, a little window appears with the first few sentences of that post so you can determine whether or not its worth entering before even clicking it. Good save on bandwidth for laurie too.

Good ideas.. Keep em coming.. Upgrade is due in couple of week, which will include an improved search, because, yes, the current search is not much good.

Active Topics lists the topics. I then have to click into them (selecting the last page or tow), scroll down to the bottom, read the posts, realise it was crap and repeat.

With an unread posts list you just scroll through the list and look at anything that catches your eye. If you want more detail you click on the link to see the post in it's thread. Yuo get more posts to look at, you get to see posts in all the forums you would no normally look at (like gear reviews and for sale and shortboards etc), and you can scroll through them very quickly. You can add forums to your ignore list so you can choose which forums you see.

Ignore Person would show a blank post with the title "Ignored poster" on it. Other forums call them Foes or Enemies which seems a tad dramatic. The few times I've used it on other forums I ignored the person for a few months then my curiosity got the better of me and they got tired of posting drivel so I unignored them.

It could also be that Laurie has provided a pretty impressive forum for us all to use at no cost. Therefore, if you'd have started your post along ths lines of "Laurie, great forum but could I please suggest some ideas" and finished with "keep up the good work, thanks" you may have had less red thumbs?

I like the idea of the most popular posts and a better search function.

Cheers

Could we have a red dot next to any threads containing

the word "conspiracy"
a post from PeterMac
the words "I'm not being racist but.."
a link to David Icke's website ?

I use active topics exclusively... it works well for me, not sure what's going on with yours there Mr. Cheese.

Some other forums only show unread topics, I hate it because sometimes I want to read what I read before.

About the times I updated fedora 10 to 12, my active topic went about 8hrs out, my theory is it's something to do with the time clock. Although my desktop time is correct, I think this computer now uses GMT when communicating with other computers.

Is there is a way to stick a breatherliser on the forum so you can't make a post when you had too much to drink?

A few years back I had a bit of a problem with ebay and auction sites in general. I'd get drunk and buy stuff. Weeks later stuff would turn up at the door that I'd have to explain.

Since finding the forum things are much better, but weeks later stuff still turns up that haunts me.
