I dont go for either team, but I just watched the replay of the 50m penalty aginst Josh Hunt in the last minute and man that was a bad call by the ump!
I dare say he will be sent to the bush next week.
don't follow either team but I agree, that decision turned the game, up until then it was a great spectacle, then the umpire awarded the game to collingwood before the siren
Umpire made the right decision (even if it was for collingwood). You cant have rules for some of the time and not others. Really was his fault for loosing his cool, he knew he didnt touch the ball yet he still went to tackle. ![]()
He clearly impeded the mark and the collingwood player could not play on. That is the rule end of story.
I'm a Geelong Fan, and technically the 50m penalty was "almost" there. But in the context of the game, I agree, it was a pretty average decision. It wasn't completely wrong, and I don't think that umpire will get banished to bush footy!
But having said that, I have actually umpired the game, and almost always enjoyed the umpiring experience. It's a tough game to umpire... I also enjoyed umpiring games in "The Bush", and I particularly enjoyed 1 full season in the Northern Territory Footy League, from Darwin. My absolute highlight was umpiring games in the Aboriginal Communities in The Bush, and on the Islands in the top end, in The Arafura Sea. I will never ever forget my time flying through Manengrida, and stopping over at Galiwinku, Elcho Island, and a separate trip to South Goulburn Island. The boys and men plying footy were so dark skinned, and at least half were playing in bare feet.

Fly Guy - When I say dark skinned... I recall doing the coin toss, and shaking hands will many of the blokes, and I couldn't believe how "dark brown / black" they were. Some of them were SO DARK, that they were almost "blue black"... It's hard to explain... really surprised me at the time... I had a black rubber band on my wrist watch, and the darkest guys were pretty much equal "black" to my watch band.
Disclosure - no negativity about using the word black above... black is reference to their particularly dark skin tones, and in no way a derogatory reference to a race of people. I admire the aboriginal people, and some of the very best AFL players have been aboriginal... The Cats have some great young aboriginal kids too. ![]()
