I was studying last night while the wife had the 7pm show on channel 10. They interviewed the seventeen year old girl that has caused all the trouble with some footballers and Ricky Nixon the player manager. Now I would not normally ever be interested in this kind of journlism, and have only glanced across it while checking out the news. I watched this so called interview and I am staggered at the sheer contempt that this crap program had showed towards the inteligence of the viewers. I do not for a second condone the actions Mr Nixon has been acused of, It is nowhere near as bad as the TOTAL AND COMPLETE EXPLOITATION OF A MERE CHILD that the 7pm show has resorted to.
Mr nixon may well have spent the night with her, there may have been some substances taken, not a good thing at all, she looks to have got through it OK. Lets see how she goes now that channel 10 and those piss weak excuses for journalists have FULLY HUMILIATED AND ABUSED HER ON NATIONAL TELEVISION with nothing to gain but ratings. I know she's been manipulative and conniving, she's just a kid. Those four pricks on that show should hang their heads in shame for that. It's a bloody disgrace and nasty crappy TV shows are getting away with it far to often. I pitty the moron that enjoys that kind of tv entertainment.

While I'm at it, I have an idea that I reckon could improve news services no end. .We just ban journalists from using adjectives. I do not need to read or hear that there has been a brutal, hideous, macabre, cold blooded murder. I just like to hear that a murder has happened and the known facts. I can decide for myself how brutal or otherwise it was. I reckon if the colourful language was cut out of news stories things might not seem anywhere near as bad.

Sorry if this is a little too extreme, I'm just a bit over it.

What I find remarkable is that I think she has been a seventeen year old school girl for at least two years.

Is the Colonel doing his best Michael Jackson impersonation or was it the other way around. Adolf, what'd you do with the photo

PS - geez I thought Rugby League could only sink to those depths but the AFL definitely has the upperhand in the grubby stakes. Absolutely the media's fault for pursuing the story with such vigour that I actually think the Government should start looking at Media laws a little more closely. What actually ever happened to the real news being reported?

There are 17 year olds and 17 year olds. A 17 year old is not exactly a child either even though under the law they seem to be when it suits. Funny when a 17 year old commits a notorious crime the gutter press bays for blood and demands they are treated as an adult. But when a 17 year old has a sexual relationship with an older person the 17 year old is suddenly a child and the adult is worse than Hitler.

She doesn't seem to be the sort of girl who goes to bed at 9pm every night after saying goodnight to her parents.

Anyway it's just another professional sport extravaganza. People get all upset when highly paid blokes who are paid to chase a ball around a paddock get into trouble. They are praised and honoured for chasing that ball. Is no wonder they get into trouble?

I agree, commercial news has been on a continual downward trajectory. A constant process of dumbing down. The news now is presented at a level that an 8 year old child could comprehend - the target used to be 12.

The good news is that if this dumbing down process continues unabated, the teletubbies will be presenting the news in around 2023. Tinky Winky has already signaled his intentions to become an anchorman if asked.

There has been a steady decline and change in listenership. Every year the commercial TV news becomes less about news and more about entertainment.

All commercial news now is entertainment with a little bit of news.

As a comparison, the kids news program, BTN, on ABC is now many times more informative. Many kids would watch a better news program than their parents!

Channel nines flagship current affairs program, 60 minutes, is now what 'A current affair' was 15 years ago.

Thankfully the dumbing down of commercial TV news coincided with the rapid expansion of the interweb and sites like Seabreeze. Thankyou Laurie

Besides doing something crazy like turning off the TV, the best thing is not to respond to or watch commercial TV. Watch SBS or ABC news instead.

Secondly, encourage and tune into 'Media watch' on ABC. This way one can laugh at the antics of commercial TV without being drawn into it.

Great show, highly recommended. They even gave themselves a serve last week for failing to apologise when they'd got it wrong.

I'm loving the morning news on ABC1 while having breakfast.
No ads, no bul****....but still has boring sport news interrupting the program.

I used to watch the Today show on 9, but Karl Stefanovic annoys the crap out of me now.
Seems worse now he has won a Logie!

It is utter crap, nearly all of it. I have been back in a truck for the past 8 weeks, absolutely hate ANY commercial radio so am stuck wit JJJ, ABC News and ABC classical.

Even ABC News radio is pretty selective and bears very little relevance to some of the most pressing issues we have globally. They have been covering this football story for the past few days. Why?

My own humble opinion is that it is deliberate, the whole dumbing down thing.

Folk may argue otherwise but no one can argue that it is not happening

Selective journalism to the max with sporting icons, or so called sporting icons.
See the "full" extended supposed off air part of the interview, when this young person said, "I was lying the whole time" then added, "No I was only joking" Just happened the CH10 and all other outlets simply cut the last part of "No I was only joking" from the vision and audio available to beef up the report..

Watch what happens when a fellow media personality, music entertainer, general entertainer or celebrity drugs out, cuts loose and acts like a boofhead. The story gets a one line...maybe, then buried. Self preservation for the the industry, and slaughter anybody else.

Don't really get the appeal of Today Tonight, ACA and fast food news....

Only TV news I watch is SBS news...... they are just telling the viewer what is going on and were, with little or no emotional inflections in their commentary...

Breakfast news is much worse, its either Karl or K(Y)oshi... ABC news seems worthy but as soon as they get into PC and rules world I lose interest....

Here goes.... I have to say Aussie TV is generally cr@p anyway... a few shows here or there, but mostly cr@p.... we are too PC.... check out UK shows, some great dark humour (Psychoville etc) and if they are shown over here they are generally only shown on ABC...

Idiocracy.......

I think we can establish from the context of this thread that the comercial media is not appealing to the discerning taste of the average watersport enthusiast.
It comes down to supply and demand. TV stations are producing what they are because its what the multitudes what to see. Scary sh!t.
Sensationalism in the news is nothing new. Its well documented how distorted the Titanic story got in 1911. Perhaps the beginning of what we're seeing now?
