I have wireless next g Internet on my IPad, I have had nothing but trouble with this device as far as Internet goes.
What I have noted is after 6pm when everyone gets home from work my upload drops as low as 0.08 which is just crap. Telstra advised me to take the unit to a Telstra shop and they will replace the sim but really I don't think it will solve the problem. Obviously it has something to do with the amount of people online?? This would be telstras problem what you think?

Yes. They need to put in another antenna.
The problem is, the internet shares the network with the mobile phone service and gets the leftover bandwidth from the phone service.
They can't go interupting a phone call while you download porn etc because holes in a phone conversation are very noticeable.
On the other hand, they are normally not all that noticeable in email downloads etc.
They do become very noticeable when there is no bandwidth left to download anything at all.
Telstra is not the only one with this problem. In fact they are normally one of the better ones.
I was helping someone else with the same problem about a year ago on the Three network, and when I checked the download speed it was 0.6 kilobits per sec. And that was kilobits, not kilobytes.
Considering the old dialups were 56 kilobits /sec, 0.6 kilobits was laughable, only no-one was laughing. It was so slow the email server was locking up and losing emails.
Give them a serve. They deserve it.
But first make sure it works ok somewhere else just in case the problem is with your ipad.

I believe the problem is world wide. The exponential increase in use of the air waves for internet connection and SMS and multimedia messaging has overloaded the air wave band width currently dedicated to those services.

The worst part of it is the restrictions caused to voice telephone calls.

I try to phone my mobile from my land line and the mobile won't ring.

Maybe two to six hours later I get a network text informing me of a missed call.

I am with Optus but friends with the devil's network (Telstra) tell me they have the same problem.

Landlines still work but for how long, who can say??

^^^ wtf pete?

Wireless will always be slower, patchier, and waaay more expensive than fixed line. And the fastest fixed line you can get is optical all the way to your house. All hail the NBN and our far-sighted government for sticking with it.

^ ha ha ha. But nobody uses fixed line internet anymore. Even this thread is about wireless. You don't see anyone walking around with their iPads and a kilometers long cable behind them, do you? The NBN is a farce and wireless is the future [self assured snigger].

I have not owned a land line for over 10 years and the only land lines I seem to call are government departments and Telstra offices!

I've been stuck on wireless broadband for the last few years, I can't wait until I build/buy my own place so I can get fixed line internet. There is just too much television/movie/radio content available these days for access through home internet to be viable on wireless. My plan is Westnet's biggest mobile plan (10gig + 10 gig) and it is easily chewed up each month if I download a movie or a few episodes of something I missed on tv.

Roll on NBN I say.

0.05 upload why because its Sunday and very few people are at work all sitting on there decks using phones and wireless Internet. Rang Telstra again told them what the problem is. They new! Going to ring me back in a hour after they do some tests! Yeah righto . I pay $100 per month for 15gb which it seems now is limited. Lets see what the outcome will be....maybe they might supply a satellite dish! Haha

Oh no Cisco, you have just accidentally confirmed that the NBN is a great idea! Wash your mouth out! [}:)]

The method mentioned in that article suggests that they will be able to use this on normal fiber, and increase the capacity. Which ultimately means that NBN should be able to upgrade to this technology if needed, when it becomes available. You wouldn't be able to do this with wireless or copper.

Realistically, this sort of speed shouldn't be needed, except where you are running aggregated connections back to a data centre, not for home users. As it is, I doubt NBN will offer speeds even approaching this, just because the need won't be there, and the links to the rest of the world won't handle it.

I think one of the reasons that they wanted to run FTTH was to allow for some growth in speed over fiber... I guess they were right....

I have just renewed my Optus contract with whom I have been for more than ten years.

They supply my land line with unlimited calls to ANY land line or ANY mobile phone within Australia and 500 gb of download at ADSL 2+ speed on a copper line in regional Qld for $105/month.

On my $19/month mobile account they have supplied me with a Nokia C5 hand piece which has a 5 mp camera, integrated GPS with Nokia Maps, a 2 gb micro SD card, is internet capable and includes $70 credit and 100 mb of download per month.

On my $31/month mobile account they have supplied an HTC Desire X hand piece which has more bells and whistles than you can throw a stick at and includes $200 credit and 200 mb download per month.

All up $155/month.

Do Telstra or any other provider have such a deal??

Our business changed to Optus in the last 12 months with Nokia C5 mobile phones. Worst phone I have ever had and the reception is woefull compared to Telstra.

So what exactly is wrong with the Nokia C5 for what it is and not comparing it with later or more expensive technology?? Does it not do what it is supposed to do??

Are you talking eggs and eggs or chalk and cheese??

The reception issue is because Telstra owns the infrastructure (it is still a monopoly) and only leases their inferior equipment to their competitors. Telstra is still a rip off company.

In a good signal area the phone shows no signal strength. (It needs to be rebooted)

In a good reception area the phone shows good signal strength but no one can get through. (Needs rebooting)

I've seen the lights flashing but no ring tone even the volume was set for normal. (Reboot to fix)

Won't hang up after a call no matter how many times you press the hang up button.

I've had the alarm not go off. (The phone was waiting for a data connection. When I clicked on connect the alarm went off, 20 minutes late)
