After all, the average pensioner alone has paid taxes and contributed to the growth of this country for the last 40 to 60 years; a Defence member voluntarily endures hardship, prepared to give up their life to preserve the way of yours; and the farmer/battler who are the backbones of this Country and Culture - never reaches for a handout but always willing to lend a hand ....



When these people rarely, if ever, speak out they are shunned, ridiculed and dismissed by the Government and barely makes a headline in the news. When refugees/immigrants speak out about repression and insensitivity to their culture in Australia, it gets widespread media coverage and quick resolution by Government bodies.

IF, these figures are true does anyone have a good reason why we shouldnt increase the pensioners and defence personel's pension up to the level of that recieved by refugees, or drop theirs to that of our pensioners?

These dodgy emails spruking the aledged gross injustice of pension vs asylum seeker (NOT illegal immigrants - they get fek all and are shipped off) payments came around just prior to the last election.

One really has to wonder how forgetful/gullible/desperate to support their cause people are to keep falling for the same scams.

As for those that perpetrate the spreading of false information to gather support for those that want asylum seekers vilified, sleep well in the knowledge you are attracting the votes/collegiality of the ignorant, xenophobic or greedy. Great partners in bed with the liars there.

Myth: Refugees can receive social security payments simply because they are refugees.
Fact: A refugee who has permanent residency in Australia receives exactly the same social security benefit as any Australian-born person in the same circumstances. Refugees apply for social security through Centrelink like everyone else and are assessed for the different payment options in the same way as everyone else. There are no separate Centrelink allowances that one can receive simply by virtue of being a refugee, nor do refugees receive cash payments under either the Integrated Humanitarian Settlement Strategy (IHSS) or the Settlement Grants Program (SGP).

Myth: A single refugee receives $1458 more per month than an age pensioner.
Fact: A single person applying for Special Benefit or the Newstart Allowance (whether or not he or she is a refugee) will receive $456 per fortnight, whereas a single person on an Age Pension payment will receive a fortnightly payment of $671.90. A single age pensioner therefore receives over $200 more per fortnight more than a single refugee (or a single Australian-born person) who qualifies for Special Benefit or Newstart - not $1458 per month less, as claimed in the first hoax email. The Asylum Seeker Assistance (ASA) Scheme provides assistance to eligible asylum seekers who are in the process of having their refugee status determined. The ASA Scheme offers income support to cover basic living expenses, paid at 89 per cent of the Centrelink Special Benefit. This would equal approximately $405.84 per fortnight for a single asylum seeker - over $260 less than the single age pension.

Myth: Illegal immigrants can receive Centrelink payments.
Fact: In general, only Australian citizens and permanent residents can receive social security payments from Centrelink and illegal immigrants would certainly not be entitled to such support. It is also factually incorrect to refer to either refugees or asylum seekers as "illegal immigrants". Recognised refugees in Australia by definition hold either a Refugee Visa or a Protection Visa, both of which entitle the holder to permanent residency. Asylum seekers - regardless of how they arrive in Australia - are permitted under Australian and international law to enter Australia for the purpose of seeking asylum, therefore asylum seekers have not broken any law and should not be referred to as illegal immigrants.

a) We obviously don't give money to illegal immigrants.
b) Refugees and illegal immigrants are very different. They do not deserve to be seperated with a '/'

I thought this sounded like BS when it did the rounds 6 or so months ago and it was quickly debunked back then.

However regardless of them getting the same entitlements when they are accepted into Australia as citizens / permanent residents, I do take issue with what they get in detention.
For example what really sh!ts me is the revelation that they get Sensodyne toothpaste (and the subsequent rubbishing of those who complained about it in the letters to the West Australian 2 or so weeks ago also annoys me greatly).

Why give them $7 a tube stuff when $3 a tube is just fine for 90% of people? Let those of them that have sensitive teeth see the doctor or dentist (that they are provided with for free), and ask the good Doc to authorise it. Why give it out as a blanket thing to all of them? Now before the bleeding hearts say it is only $4 difference or whatever....
(1) many of them are used to no toothpaste or having to PAY for it back home where there is no social security
(2) pensioners have trouble with luxuries and if just one of them in WA said she needs Sensodyne and can't afford it, then that is a national disgrace that we as an affluent nation should be ashamed of
My grandmother brushed her teeth with soap (try that some time) only 25yrs ago due to lack of disposable income on the pension.

I'm guessing the sensodyne is purchased due to poor dental hygene (due to lack of education or sheer poverty) prior to arrival. It just might reduce the number of dentist bills in the short term?

If you gave the stray dog caviar and champagne, and continued to give your own dog dry dog bikkies and water, it would be dumb.
