I'm interestd to hear from people who enjoy both of these awesome sports.
It would be interesting to talk about what influences your decision on which one on a windy day.
Which one came first. A lot of people have gone to kiting from sailboarding. Thats natural when sailboardings been around a lot longer. Any kiters taken up sailboarding?
Maybe its your local conditions that come in to play, Or what your mates are up to.
Please don't post here if your one eyed sailor or kiter. There's more than enough threads on here to hang sh!t on the other sport.
Used to sailboard but on the goldy I'd spend more time waiting for the breeze to pick up enough than being out enjoying it. And, while waiting, watching guys on kites having a ball.
If ya can't beat them switch sides ![]()
Never been on a sailbored since.
I started kiting and then went to windsurfing and am now back to doing both! I got sick of waiting for the right conditions to kite in where as with windsurfing, I started on a big board and could go out in anything from 5 to 20kts! Then when I got the hang of it, I found there were some days that were perfect for kiting and it is significantly easier than windsurfing. So I like kiting for the fun and the ease of use whereas I like windsurfing for the technical difficulty and wide range of conditions.
If its a solid stable seabreeze I like to kite, if it's gusty and unpredictable, I like to windsurf.
I just enjoy both and love watching the banter between the two sides!
Luke.
Ive Windsurfed for over 25yrs and been kiting for about 5. Originally started kiting for the light wind wind days or when there was no swell. Found myself choosing the kite more and more. Mainly because of the conditions on the east coast these days . This summer just gone I made the decision to sell my sailboard gear as I hardly used it the last two summers. For me if I lived near great wind and swell I would choose wavesailing over kiting any day of the week.
Never kited but I quite enjoy windsurfing with kiters. Never had the issues some windsurfers complain about.

Thats Gold. I burst out laughing and now my kids are crowding around the computer to see whats so funny.
I did some sail racing, Lasers to 470s and hobie 14's.
Windsurfed as far as the big board small sail stage.
Waterskied all the variations from kneeboard, disc, double, single, trick, wakeboard, surfboard (we used to call it skurfing), home-made boards.
Flew 4 x Flexifoil 10 foot stackers with a harness on the beach.
Kiting just brought all that together for me.
I have a race board coming soon, which takes a lot from windsurfing board design, and I think now that kite racing will bring all that background together into something great. ![]()
I knew nothing about kiting when I moved to Lancelin a few years ago, and had only tried windsurfing once when I was 12, so had no bias one way or the other. I decided to give kiting a crack when I was on the beach watching the guys boosting 10+ metres and figured that looks like fun.
I have kited and windsurfed. Kiting is great cos it easy, both technically and to carry around with you.
I just dont think you can beat the feeling of windsurfing. Absolutely Nothing like it!
