For those of us who work for a boss and 'the going for a surf/sail etc' won't cut it. What are the lame excuses you use to get out of a dull day/half day at the office - I'm almost out of ideas, and days I can take off.

If you have a girlfreind with a sweet voice ask her to call it in even if shes at work herself , if your boss has any alfa male genes which being your boss he probably does , then he,ll understand that your probably not sick but just marking your territory with her if you know what i mean , and you hit the beach contshence free

Nahh won't cut it. I have to ring up or email or text y boss myself, with my history. The last time I saw the swell pumping I said I had stomach issues from the rogan josh I ate the night before. My boss laughed and then I told him I did a wet fart and needed to go home right now. He went quiet after that.

Surely it shouldn't come to that.

I need valid excuses!

If its one day just tell the boss you are sick.

If the boss presses for dails tell them you are on porceilan bowl with a case of gastro. No one really enjoys talking about irregular bowl movements.

the one I use when I am going kiting for the arvo when it blows well.

I ring my supervisor and tell him that I have a major wind problem.

And he says no probs, so off I go

Pro tip: coming back from a one day sickie / carers leave with a nasty case of sunburn is not a good look

sounds like your backed into a corner somewhat , all though one that i have used in the past is rolled the ankle on my way to work or if you dont want the grief that comes with compo then just tell him you did it while at home on stairs etc that way the generally accepted recoup time gives you three to four days but check in every day with a progess report that way youve got a bit of time to relax and get amongst it sans doctors certificate

Try honesty...if it still exists in this screwed up world!?!

IMHO, if you get caught taking a sickie, and lying about it, it should be instant dismissal. (Ex-employer here btw...)

I work extra hours knowing that when I need them, I can take a 'me' break for a sail or go to kids sports, school appointments etc. When I sat in on my initial job interview, I said that this would be the case, my boss agreed to it, and as I've been honest from day one, it's never been a prob. I just call the office, let the practice manager know that the wind's up, and that I'll be back in 2-3hrs (or if it's a late arvo sail, knock-off early & generally come back in after kids in bed to make up a few hours)...easier, and lets me sleep at night knowing that all's above board.

1) Do not give an excuse. You dont need to supply and excuse.
There is no excuse your either sick or your not.
If you dont follow the correct steps your excuse may end you up fired without union backing.

Hello <manager etc> this is <insert name department position>I am phoning to let you know that i am currently unfit for work today the <insert date>
This is <yes no> work related.
Thankyou.

I work in an industry not covered by any union I know of now. What is the source of this statement? And 'you are either sick or not sick' is just as lame a statement as me looking for lame excuse to get out of work and smell the roses every once in a while.

Employees are not resources, despite how good they look on employers spreadsheets. I'm a person with a family who like everyone else has: family issues, car issues, house issues and me issues.

I'd love the day when this world turns around and I can trust my employer to be honest with their employees. Until that day I'll just play the game.

Chairo's dont supply a doctors certificate either but should get you off the hook.

I'm with sailhack. Honesty works best for sure. I build up hours around kiting/surfing. I have an arrangement with my boss that as long as I do my hours he is happy. Obviously occasionally things come up and you have to miss some sessions (meetings etc) but that's all part of it and well worth it. Obviously not all industries are suited to this, but if job flexibility is an option it is definitely the way to go.

Or here in WA an "appointment with the doctor" is not entirely untruthful
