La Nina 'gone from Pacific' AAP, The West Australian

March 27, 2012, 5:10 pm

The La Nina conditions that have contributed to flooding and heavy rainfall in Australia during the past two years have all but disappeared from the Pacific region, the Bureau of Meteorology says.

In its latest update on the El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO), the bureau says La Nina conditions are no longer present in either the Pacific Ocean or the atmosphere.

It said the 2011-2012 La Nina began last spring, and played a key role in prolonged wet conditions for eastern Australian throughout summer and into early autumn.

“South-east Australia recorded its wettest seven-day period in history, and the combined effect of two back-to-back La Nina events contributed to Australia's wettest two-year period on record,” the bureau said.

The weather bureau's manager of climate prediction services, Dr Andrew Watkins, said that while this La Nina may be over, we still need to be cautious.

“The oceans around Australia remain warmer than normal, and the tropical wet season is expected to remain active until the end of April, bringing with it the possibility of tropical cyclones and further heavy rain,” Dr Watkins said.

He said the likelihood of a third successive La Nina remained low, with none of the models used by the bureau indicating a return.

doesn't matter anyway, as the world ends this December

La Nina - sounds like a Mayan name. There is proof enough!

Calendar = 58 if you add all the letters together . If you do 58 squared, divided by 666 you get 5 which is the number of years in the normal La Nina cycle.
Mmmm kay?

Don't you guys diversify? My sailboarding and kite-surfing may not be as hot as yours, but this year I have...

- paddled across Bass Strait (again) - getting sunburnt along the way, and saw no rain in Tasmanian waters. I looked
out for wind-surfers on Flinders Island but only saw some clowns watching each other take turns on a jet-ski at
Whitemark.

- went canyoning a couple of times; yeah, this got cancelled too due to too much water, but Butterbox was amazing;
although I have done that at least 8 times, the amount of water was incredibly exciting.
ozultimate.com/canyoning/track_notes/mt_hay.htm

The climb out of Alpheus canyon (one of the exits for Arethusa canyon), including free-soloing bolted routes and hand-
over-hand up fixed lines prior to scrambling up ridges as the skies opened big time.

- although rock-climbing was canned a couple of times, I started to explore top-rope solo, come jumaring 100m above
the rain-forest below. www.climb.org.au/index.php?page_id=10&action=area&area_id=1432

- jumped in the white-water kayaks a few times to blast our way down the Nepean/Hawkesbury from Penrith to
Windsor. Plus the Grose after walking in with a pack-raft. www.alpackaraft.com/

Wheres the fun in needlessly risking your life climbing a rock face?

Id have more fun trying to shave my face with an outboard motor.

Diversify! I have made up my mind to paraglide. From our back door I can see a flag that tells me when to go for a kite. In the distance behind it is a popular hang glider and paraglider launch pad and soaring area.

I have sat and watched them a lot more than I have kited this summer

Actually I dont' recall that at all. The reports I heard last year predicted another La Nina, but not as strong as the previous one.....

Either way I can guarantee you that the Wivenhoe Dam will remain at the fear of flood level of around 35% until it is absolutely clear we are back into a drought....only then we will bring it's max permissable level back up to the horrendously risky level of 45% full......whilst watching it dwindle down past 20%....then we can all join in class actions against the government for letting all our drinking water go....
