Seen on the news last night, cost $ 170,000,000.00 to house 800 men???? no girls????

Top accommodation with rooms with ensuite, basketball and volley ball courts (indoor and outdoor) fast internet connections air con, phone!!!!

Wish they would spend 1/2 of that to give old peeps or street peeps decent accommodation in Perth............ But no... hang on... no brownie points from the United Nations if you look after your own poor peeps.

Should we have our priorities right??

Cut the foreign aid! Help our own with the saved money and then if there is some left spread it around!

Yes I know that is a redneck racist comment but I will not apologize for it!

I don't think that's racist

Realistically we need to have a world wide standard for refugee housing, meals and luxurys.

I wouldnt expect the same treatment if I was a refugee in their country.

Yes, it would be considered to help out people in our own country first and then others, but I would like to look at the existing cost of welfare, medicare and housing for the homeless and compare it to what we spend in foreign aid to see how much of it we are spending abroad.

I don't know the figures but would imagine that what we spend helping people from othe countries would be far less than what we spend on our own.

It does seem like a high figure for only 800 people though. If we could lessen the cost per person, would we help more refugees with these extra funds or would we all want a new flat screen tv?

The main source of the cost is the people involved in the housing. There would be very little difference in cost between a 1* and 5* accommodation. Housing them in 1* would give rise to social disorder and end up costing even more.

Housing a prisoner is ~A$100,000 a year.

You have to remember a lot of these people have had it really bad... treating them bad just adds to the problem.

In order to save one should look at the bureaucracy associated with their housing.

BTW: I'm not sure valium would help loggy, may be an L-Pill.

That's because you would be deported..

Our government is a pack of wankers and soft cocks

Asylum is the biggest con going.. Why cant people just apply by the normal means of immigration/visa applications? They have previously held passports and ID.. But choose to destroy it and chase asylum.. That is basically criminal activity (deception for personal gain) Sooner you seabreeze do-gooders realise it is the sooner we see no more BS topics on this subject.

I've got an easy solution to the problem of 'boat people'. Hand ownership of Christmas Island to some other government. If they can make it to our mainland without being eaten, we can consider their various applications.
I mean, as it is, it's hardly a major mission from Indonesia's shores

Lets cut all foreign aid to $0.
Then maybe if we have any money left over after looking after all our own people
can we contemplate giving some to other countries .
Charity begins at home is my opinion.

An Englishman wants to marry an Irish girl and is told he needs to become irish before he can do so. It is a very simple operation where they remove 5% of your brain.
Anyway the englishman wakes up after the operation and the doctor comes up to him looking all worried and say "I am terribly sorry, theres been a mistake to be sure, we accidently removed 50% of your brain instead of 5%!"
The englishman sits up and simply say "She'll be right, mate"

While waiting to finalise their Australian residental status, two Afghanistani men start chatting. As they part, they agree to meet in a years time and see who has adapted better to the Australian way of life.
True to their word, they meet after the year is up. The first says to the second "We have integrated so well...yesterday, I ate a meat pie and drank a VB while watching my son play Aussie rules"
The second man replies "F**k off, towelhead"

That's funny.
But it makes the point that if the abodidginies had a more coherent immigration policy they might have got a better deal.
Aren't we in the same situation now?

If you were in their shoes you too would take the risk, don't forget the majority of refugees head to Europe we only get a trickle.

But if they are genuinely persecuted they would get a spot. Why destroy identification? And then even worse, once here they sometimes riot about how long it takes to process an application?
Just wondering....

These people are not PRISONERS - they are refugees, there is a massive difference.

Cheapest option is community housing (once they have passed health and security checks) - but we don't do this because
1. we are terrified of the strange brown people and it would be political suicide
2. Serco has vested interests
3. We can't justify the money to get the processing done in a timely fashion cause we're spending it all on keeping genuine refugees locked up offshore (the most expensive way to do it)

Sorry mate that is crap.
Once they have "passed health and security checks" they are in like Flynn. They are not "locked up like prisoners" after they have passed those checks and are assessed as being genuine refugees. They are in detention whilst those checks are conducted and no rational person woudl suggest it should not be so.

If you want to expedite the above checks, don't chuck your I.D and play games with your name.

Ive been driving past that camp for over a year , and im stunned at just how long its taking to build.
it may have cost 170mill but somebody somewhere is creaming off the top because all it is is a bunch of dongas, just like any mining or construction camp surrounde by absurd amounts of razor wire.
normally camps that size and quality would go u[p in a matter of weeks or months , but these contractors are dragging the job out to well over a year.
thats where most of your 170mill is going
