He has pledged to give away half his wealth to same charity as Buffett and Gates. What a great Australian!

interesting letter, I will be interested to see over time ,where the majority of his wealth goes.
having worked for him many years ago , I found the letter rather out of character, but maybe he's changed
rather vague on grammatic detail and authentificion too

what a load of complete crap. The letter is more a motherhood statement than a committment to actually do anything. Unfortunately twiggy has serious form in saying one thing and doing the opposite. Maybe you missed the sorry saga of twiggy and gina bleating about having to pay tax on the billions they were making either digging up australias natural resources, or in ginas case receiving royalties for someone else digging up those resources. Twiggy went as far as to say that taxing the wealthy was communism. If billionaires really want to contribute, the best way is to pay tax at the same rate as the rest of us. forget the top tax bracket, how about paying the 30 percent most average people pay. As of last year FMG was yet to pay any tax in australia. Maybe twiggy may start this benevolence by no longer screwing the traditional owners whose land hes mining on and pay them a fair royalty. I encourage success, but i have no time for excess and twiggy, gina and their ilk are the epitome of excess!

WTF Screwing the traditional owners Comparing Twiggy to Gina, seriously

Perhaps you should read the following: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_Forrest

Do you understand the difference between the corporation (FMG) and the individual (Twiggy) How they may be taxed differently

After you have read about Twiggy and philanthropy, ask yourself, what do I do for others What do I give

What I don't get is why did he get all flustered about the mining tax, if he knew he was going to give away half of all the profits he's made from raping australias resources anyway.

Good on him for the gesture - has he actually, given away any of his wealth yet, or is it just a pledge in his will? Sorry, haven't read all the docs on his generous offering.

Wouldn't surprise me if he was pennyless when he dies, Wouldn't be the first time that has happened in the wild west.

Two types of peeps in the world: Real & Fake. Twiggy falls into the latter for me.

No offense pugwash, but an article in wikipedia, possibly penned by twiggys pr machine is hardly testimony to the mans generosity. I certainly understand the difference between the twiggy and the corporation he runs and almost single handedly controls. Im also aware that the employment covenent which he helped set up (a nice idea, credit where it is due) was almost totally subsidised and funded by the federal government. After auditing the program it failed to deliver anywhere near the number of jobs because it failed to address the underlying factors behind structural unemployment of Aboriginal Australians. It assumed in line with twiggys personal beliefs that all that was required to fix aboriginal unemployment was a willing benevolent employer or corporation. As for comparing twiggy to gina, if you read what they say about tax, and the perogative of the wealthy to do with their money as they please, unfettered by trivialities such as taxation and the rule of law or civil society, then there is absolutely nothing between them. The primary difference is that Twiggy is a whole lot better than Gina at playing the pr game. As for what i do and give, well unlike twiggy i personally dont need to brag about it and plaster it in the papers so i can use it as another mechanism to prosecute my case for avoiding paying tax. I would not feel this way about twiggy if he hadn't spent the last decade doing everything possible to avoid paying tax at every level. Real philanthropy is what you give after youve paid your fair share of tax. It not what you do to avoid paying your fair share.

In the words of Kerry Packer

I am not evading tax in any way, shape or form. Of course, I am minimising my tax. Anybody in this country who does not minimise his tax wants his head read. I can tell you as a government that you are not spending it so well that we should be donating extra.

Probably applies in Twiggys case

I guess you are referring to Gates well meaning but unfortunate foray into vaccinating the third world.
Raises the issue of throwing a heap of money at a charity or good cause doesn't always work. Admin, big corporates and govts chew a heap of it up. I would like to say if I was in Twiggys shoes I would like control over how the money was spent, not easy as it sounds however.

Good on Twiggy for putting it out there anyway.

So his charitable foundation will be set up with a board of directors and staff to administer the good work.

How much will get to those who need it and how much will be used to pay the people that run it?

Just a front really as the board will be him, his family and other cohorts, whilst management will be much of the same.

Yeah well done
