There are no waves today, there wont even be a seabreeze. Great day to come down to cottesloe and tell Mr Barnett it is not cool to exploit the Kimberley. It is too valuable a resource to destroy for the sake of some resources. Lets save it for later - when we really it.
Last winter I went up and had a look at the place to see what all the fuss was about. It was the best time of year to see it and I would assume that what I saw was as good as it gets, but,...I had to agree with Col when he made the polite statement about James Price point, that it was "nice but unremarkable".
I thought that was being overly generous.
It was not all that "nice."
10 km south around Quongdong point is very nice, 10 km north is nice. 180 km north around Cape Leveque in nice, but James Price Point is NOT nice.
It was the most un-nice part of the whole coast up the Dampier peninsula.
I came to the conclusion that if a gas hub had to go somewhere, this was as good a place to put it as any.
The fact is, wherever they put something like this, someone is going to complain.
There is absolutely nowhere in australia that you could build something like this and have total agreement that it was a great place for it.
The other fact is that while we are living a life which demands more energy and resources for everything then it will have to go somewhere.
The day we all get rid of our cars and houses and 120cm liquid cleverdick tv's then perhaps we can shout a bit louder over what price we have to pay.
At the moment, the price is that some of the less nice places will have to be temporarily sacrificed.
And it is temporary.
When the gas runs out or we find a better option, then the area will once again revert to a "nice but unremarkable" stretch of coast.
Ngaru, if I went to the meeeting I would be shouting support for Col. ![]()
We need to find a balance between taking and giving and the current generation has taken far too much. Hence, it is a bloody good idea to put asside some for our kids (and beyond). What better way to do so then by declaring the Kimberly a national park where no mining will be done. Something we can be proud of.
As a wind / kite / general surfer you have to have some appreciation for ecological balance and the immensely powerful beauty of nature (rejuvinating, inspiring, etc...). I would like to share that idea with people who think that nature is just for taking and remind them how much more value for money we get by respecting it.
There are plenty of mining opportunities in WA, but that does not mean we should just use all of the now.
Nicolaas
Bit late.
Think you will find there is a bit of the resource industry in the Kimberley already.
Not too sure how much Argyle and Kununurra added to the wealth of Australia, and not too sure that Australia would be a better place had neither ever occured.
Perhaps we can give our children less man made climate change by changing from coal and oil to natural gas.
Maybe we should shut the eastern states coal ports and open up Kimberly gas terminals ?
GD, Why on earth would you go to James Price point rather than Quondong point? Or up to the lagoon? or anywhere else?
Do you have a fetish for sand blowouts? sharp rocks? Biting f ing sand flies? Mozzies?
Oh I know. It was because you were always the only one there rather than joining the many people who frequent all the nice and remarkable spots along there.
I can understand that.
When I was there, I was the only one there too. Noone else. Eventually I left.
But all the other spots, that is the nice and remarkable spots, had lots of people camping and fishing and just munging around. So I camped there too.
I'm hard pressed to believe that you haven't confused James Price Point with Quondong point. And if they were going to put a gas plant at Quondong point I would be complaining too. But they're not, so I'm not.
No non of what you said pweedas.
I didn't live in Broome for the sake of Broome...it was because of every beautifull place
around it...
One mans piece of paradise is not another I suppose. thats why the world is so diverse because we are all different and that makes us all unique ..(goodness that's deep) ![]()
Just sick of people giving off the cuff statements on a coast line that I love.
I think I left my heart up there ![]()
