I recall sitting up watching the late news when the gorgeous newsreader Sandra Sully told us that a plane had crashed into one of the towers of the World Trade Centre. I thought at the time that it must have been a light plane which flew off course. Then they showed the footage of the plane ploughing into the side of the building. Then the next building got hit I went numb. Then the 1st building went down and then the second.
At times I wonder how terrified the people were - especially the people that were trapped in one tower as they watched the other tower going down.
I recall one story about a fireman who was having his last day on the job as he was retiring and got that last call out - he did'nt come home.
My heart goes out to the people who survived and the families who had loved ones that didn't make it home.
Yep, it's one of those times in your life you will always remember where you were and who you were with. The world changed that day.
I was in bed asleep and woke to a Hawaiian friend of mine that was living with me at that time screaming and going "NOOOOOO WAAAY!". Here I am thinking f'en noisy Seppo, shut up.
I get up to see what he is doing this is about 5am. The $h^t had hit the fan real hard.
After a couple of hours I could not process it any longer, my now wife and I took a walk on the beach. About 30 knots howling Northerly and there was a humpback the closest to shore I had seen around here ever and to this day ever again. Doing the full show, breaching, jumping right out etc.
People you didnt know where just in shock walking around like Zombies.
I got to work about 12:30, we normally started at 8:30. I was first to arrive and we spent the rest of the day just blowing out, watching TV etc. Nobody cared that nothing was done.
Saying all of that though, I have never been to the U.S. It is still a mythical land I see on Telly.
The Sari Club bombings however rocked me harder, I had spent many nights in that inescapable place.
Crazy that 9-11 was 10 years ago. Still feels like yesterday the memories are that clear.
Went to Bali few weeks after the bombing, was at the Bounty hotel 5 min walk to the Sari club. The site was very moving, a lot of Balinese died in the inferno as well and the ground was covered with little offering to the Gods. My son in law's sister was in the club when it blew apart and escaped with no major physical injuries, they were there for a wedding and they never found the body of the groom. The Bali attack was close to home and moves me more than the Trade Centre attack

I went to bed early that night and was living by myself. I got up the next morning went downstairs and flicked the radio on. JJJ was live and the normal programing was not on, they were talking about the WTC ect and it all seemed a bit strange.
So I turned the TV on and the first thing I saw was a replay of the second plane hitting. I can only imagine what it would have been like to be there and see it all happening.
I watched a great doco that my manager gave me just called "911" very good story on one of the NYFD houses and their guys shot by the Naudet Bros who filmed the first plane strike.
sorta over all the 911 coverage . Bali bombings are more relevant to australians . I'm sick of seing **** in the paper with a celebrity telling us where they were when the towers got hit. Really who gives a ****
The Mrs called me and said she'd been evacuated from her building (Canary Wharf UK)
I've been in the towers.
I remember on the day, at the time (live) thinking HOW THE F**K did that tower implode on itself.... when the 1st came down.
Then WTF is going on, 2 buildings imploding... something farking weird here.
Then when they said on the news 3 buildings had collapsed... I google'd for the 3rd... and an hour later it came down.
Then I was like... WTF is going here, those buildings were demolished... then it's like I've been in the twilight zone with dumb and dumber ever since and things have just gotten worse and weirder.
Also been 10 years since the fall of building 7.
you know, the 650 ft giant superstructure that fell symmetrically at free-fall speed down on it's own foot-print at approx 5.25pm on the afternoon of Sept 11.

For me, I watched it live at the time with my son. Don't think I got much work done the next day.
Won't forget it but like others have said, I'm pretty much over it.
last week the Mayor of London did say we need a controlled demolition of conspiracy theories regarding Sept 11.

The one about Bush blowing up the buildings for oil.
The girl interveiwed on JJJ whos grandfather was on one of the planes that hit the tower..............talking about how she has to watch/cant get away from seeing images of the plane with her grandfather in it crashing,again and again.
Said it makes her sick watching her family member die over and over.
Still cant comprehend in my little peanut brain that it actually happend....
But yeah,,the Saria Club bombing hit home harder for me,
having spent many,many nights in the place as all Aussies in Bali did.
It was knowen as the Aussie pub/place to hang by locals and tourists so to me I see it as a guttless attack on Australian people.
I was thinking how much the world has changed since then. And there have been lots of changes. So much paranoia around now. The world's hasn't become a better place since it happened.
10 years ago I was an idealistic 23 year old and was more astonished at the event then sympathetic.
My view was cemented even more, at the time, when the US administration used their citizens outrage over September 11 to start a war in a country of their choosing. They were going into Iraq and no rational speaking person or country, nor a lack of evidence was going to convince them otherwise.
With the Gung Ho approach I think the US wasted an opportunity to continue having the world community behind them.
I really wanted a conspiracy theory to explain September 11 being a trigger for a US lead war in oil rich Iraq. Unfortunately there is no conspiracy to explain incompetence - the simple thought process of a confident yet bumbling George Bush or the often bizarre thought process of Donald Rumsfield still makes me laugh to this day

10 years on I have matured, experienced life and the loss of life, and now have a family to look after. I find the whole event extremely sad indeed and feel bad I wasn't as sympathetic to the victims, and their friends and families, as I am now.

relative to the entire size of the building the fires were small/tiny.
for the building to fall in the manner it did [straight down] ALL not some of the steel columns would have had to give way at the same time.....anyway fire does not melt or soften steel.

At the time we were moving back home from a work stint in the US.
Taking the plane out to Oz on Sept. 17th.
We were closing up the house the very morning this happened.
For the few days we were there until we left, people in the streets were going: "I don't care if you're aussie or english or euros - if you're not with us, you're the enemy." (It still is a bit like that, IMO.)
The missus didn't want to fly anymore after that, but held my end that I was leaving with the kids anyhow.

Diffuse flames burn far cooler.
Oxygen-starved diffuse flames are cooler yet.
The fires in the towers were diffuse -- well below 800ºC.
Their dark smoke showed they were oxygen-starved -- particularly in the South Tower.
