This may put a lie to the idea that white pointers are in danger of extinction. Ten white pointers in eleven weeks off one beach. If this is to be believed they are more prevalent than many thought.
Stockton beach is somewhat renouned for sharks from what I've heard. You wouldn't want they's guys rocking up next to your peak if your out for a surf.
I would be interested to hear how many white's they've tagged and how many recatches they've had though.
Within a very short time after the movie was made public they banned targeting them although I am sure it still goes on.We often see them when kiting and one of us has actually hit one.
They appear to be targeting the large schools of Kahawai Salmon that frequent the area. It is a very popular holiday area with a pretty good selection of swimmers and surfers to choose from but they are obviously not the diet of choice.
They are not close to extinction here although I am under no illusion that the global biomass of sharks is in serious trouble. Researchers estimate that they are being killed at the rate of 15,000 a day for shark fin soup.
Anyone who has seen this practice on film would have to be disgusted with it.
I saw it in Freemantle about two years ago. It is a brilliant must see if you like wildlife documentaries.
