My hiace has adhesive remnants on it from old stick on sign writing. I've tried wax and grease remover - no go. I've tried acetone - works slowly and takes off the paint. I've tried brake cleaner - same as acetone. There most be some safe solvent for this stuff. Does anyone know what I should try next?

I don't know if it is available to the public, but if you can find it, Minehan Solvant AC or X55 (100% liquid hydrocarbon) will do the job nicely and is safe with most paints and plastics.

White Spirits, one of the most underrated cleaners, great for sticker residue and heaps of other things.
Won't affect your paint.

I did a whole van a few months ago and used cut and polish from auto cheap $9
plus an electric hand held polished from bunnings for about $35 (did not mind to buy this as I will use it in the future)

I tried toluene (sp?) for removing some residue and it worked well. I bought it from Bunnings, in the paint section.

I think its also meant to be a paint solvent, so try with care. Supposedly a carcinogen too, and good octane improver.

Pure turpentine seems to do the job without removing the paint.
And I don't mean the usual mineral turps, for paint thinners.
Pure turps is a natural distilate from wood I think and completely different to mineral turps.

I've used pure turps many times to remove old stickers from sails and things and it seems to do so without wrecking the sail.
It takes about 5 minutes to soften the glue and then you can just roll it off with a cloth. It's a messy procedure.
Try it on a small section first.

Soak a cloth and leave on the glue then wipe off. Probably too late now but using a heat gun when removing stickers is much easier and leaves less glue behind

Ive used toluene in the past and would not use it
unless you are selling it and not to a friend.

From experience, all cleaners above might work but the residue will have affected the finish on the van. The only way to remove all remnants of surface damage is with a good cut and polish.

[EDIT]

I read this as sticky residue in van so my previous suggestion is no longer needed

This gear is available from Bunnings - www.de-solv-it.com/

It works well on boards and is even safe on sails to remove sticker goop. Worth a shot, not too expensive and readily available

Believe it or not, the best thing for the job is Aerogard.

It works on eveything, great for graffiti, bat po0. Word has it also keep mozzies away.
