I read that there is talk about the Police be given the powers to punish "Trolls" on the net.

www.dailytelegraph.com.au/nocookies?a=A.flavipes

Is anybody on Seabreaze actually not a troll? Are we a community of trolls?

**note** for fear of punishment I was not actually referring to anyone as a troll, this was the opinion of someone else, and I love Charlotte Dawson.

They are all in the kiters forums.
Every so often security breaks down and one of them escapes.
They run off to the windsurfer forums and apply for assylum but mostly we have to refuse on the basis of them being unfit persons for proper society.

Dunno about the apply for assylum, that implies you'd want to live amongst windsurfers. Ewww Just the thought makes makes me feel dirty. More like a suicide mission.

It's BS this is even considered. Apparently celebs use social media for self promotion. However they can't handle the two way communication.

If you can't handle the heat then get out of the kitchen.

If politicians haven't got anything better to do than to pass such a law and the police haven't got anything better to do than enforce it, Australia will be much the worse for it on so many levels.

Hopefully this will never get any further than the latest story promoted by crappy journalists full of self importance.

Abusing a celeb or somebody online is not trolling. It is hurtful and the school bullying thing is way outa hand and contributing to depression and suicide, for example. Thus, yes, it should be legislated against

Trolling is the fishing analogy - putting something out there hoping for a bite. A stupid low act obviously a sign of low self esteem or just being a juvenile loser who stirs up others. That should not be illegal obviously.

Half the problem here is incorrect terminology clouding the debate.

It is like the difference between overtly threatening somebody with harm (illegal) and just being a rude **** (not illegal)

Big difference

If I had my way I'd ban all of you. I often crawl up in the fatal position and rock, because you mock me beyond belief.

I'm gunna say it for the last time. My 10 turns like an 8 and has the power of a 12. Don't mock me.

Also the term Windsurfer isn't an age bracket. It's a sport.

Ahh no. Unlike schoolyard bullying one has the option of turning off the computer or phone, turning off the Internet connection and then living a normal life without worrying about what other people are saying online. If you can't do that then don't engage in the online community in the first place.

This is basically outlawing a potential crime. So it will become illegal to say something because it might cause them to do something stupid or make them feel bad. If you can't handle it then don't do it in the first place.

IE if I was a celebrity and paid by Ford to say how great my new Ford car was, then why the hell shouldn't someone have a go at me about that? If I said how great the party was last Wednesday night while ordinary people have to go to bed early so they go to work Thursday, then why shouldn't I be open to attack?

I think it has gone a bit further when people are sending stuff telling already depressed people to kill themselves.

Turn it off. Speak to someone who knows and cares for you. Go for a walk in the park and read a book. Its pretty simple. It will all blow over in a week or two anyway.

two great stories in the news recently about internet trolls/scammers

I guess you got to give it to them for thinking these ideas up and then having the guts to execute them:

This dude was a classic - I kind of hope he gets off, cause this story made me laugh out loud. (lol)

www.theage.com.au/national/victoria/bodybuilders-blackmail-ruse-exposed-20120913-25u6b.html

the text message he sent victims of his scam is gold:

read what I am telling u Option 1 is you don't co operate and i wont hesitate to upload this video and send the link to everyone. Option 2 is you send me $300 and no one will ever see this video and ull never hear from me again. if you don't co operate I will upload it and show 1 person a day until u see im serious and then u can contact me via email when you want to pay and ill stop showing people. Dont waste your time trying to track my ip (internet provider) as im using a proxy ip that cant be traced. if u go offline or don't co operate I will upload the video of you wanking to a gay website.

And then there's our photoshop fraudster. I was looking at his photos, he obviously spent a lot of time getting these photos right. The lighting is spot on.

www.news.com.au/money/fake-photos-with-the-real-rich-and-famous-used-by-conman-dimitri-de-angelis-to-rip-off-85-million/story-e6frfmci-1226471366985

He admitted photoshopping his face on to James Packer's body so it looked like he was standing next to Kerry Packer, and sent the pictures to prospective investors. Others he photoshopped himself with included Nelson Mandela, Bill Clinton, Pope John Paul II, the Dalai Lama, John Howard, Vladimir Putin and Westpac boss Gail Kelly.

I guess we all know that, but many depressed ppl and teenagers don't know better. Look at teenagers suffering withdrawal symptoms if they have no computer / phone for a week.

GenY has never NOT had mobiles and the web etc and their social interactions are un-natural as a result. Many of them say stuff that is weak gutted and abusive online - stuff they'd never say in person - and the recipient doesn't turn off cos they think they 'need' social media. The whole thing is bullcrap but because of their dumbarse behaviour maybe we do need new laws...

They aren't talking about kids who are ugly and are picked on by their peers. They are talking about mainly minor celebrities who use social media for publicity, basically saying how awesome they are. When it backfires they try to get a bit of publicity by saying how they are the victim. Ratbag journalists jump onboard then politicians who should know better start talking about bringing in laws that will turn many people into criminals.

Its unbelievable this is even contemplated. If you can't handle criticism from the medium then don't use the medium. Unlike the camera and the uncritical mass media that usually tells celebrities how awesome they are, social media can and does bite back.

As Adolf's links show, current laws appear to handle new types of crimes fairly well and unlike being a troll, which is a pre-crime, actual criminal acts occured.
