OPR have cut 70 jobs. Just watch what happens across town now. There'll be another couple of hundred out of work in the next couple of weeks as a result of this. I know this for a fact.
Good news for Spot X. Poor news for the poor sods looking for work just before Christmas.
Okay, lets get one thing straight, 70 people were offered redundacy packages, an additional 40 people have lost their jobs with nothing. Our contractors associated with service provision get nothing & this will flow onto to the communities of Cue & Geraldton. OPR & CRL will now have approx. 17 people remaining in the West Perth offices. I am directly effected by this & will loose alot of good people as a result............I could go on about the timing with the build up to Christmas & the fact most projects don't hire til late Feb from now on etc but really there is no good time to be made redundant. I can only speak from my POV, but CRL and Mitsy has done its best to maintain momentum with this project, unfortunately the world economy hasn't & as a result the chinese have decided to sit & wait it out. When the project does proceed and its a when, not if, the true value of the mid west will be recognised & unfortunately the construction cost will have significantly increased.
If you know of Tradies and TA's who are going to go through tough times, tell em to register with a labour hire company sooner rather than later. Over the Xmas period is when a lot of staff take breaks and to cover them, Companies will use labour hire extensively. Even on mining shutdown crews you can make some good coin to get you by over Xmas.
Better than nothing i suppose.
I feel for the boys losing their jobs at this time of the year. Never a nice feeling.
Gero needs to have some certainty on the OKG Port. We have had 20+ years of false hopes on this Port. Maybe now we can plan on what we know will happen instead of what might happen and the town can move on.
