Sad news about the Abolone diver near coffin bay - condolences to the families and the diver that was on the boat with him - having recently spent some time in the area and sailed some of these waters it just goes to show that they are always out there and you just never know when the buggers will appear.

Also remember they are doing the same as you, looking for a feed and you are in their environment. There are safety cages made for abalone divers, but if they don't use them they do so at their own risk!

This diver [according to reports] was taken leaving the cage to get back on the boat.

You can climb in/out of cage directly from boat as designed but it is awkward in other than smooth seas. Most drift the cage away from the boat and there by becomes unsafe.

I couldn't find any reports that a cage was being used. (do you have any links?)

But people who know him say he always wore a Shark Shield. If so, this proves that a Shark Shield won't stop a shark if he's willing to kill.

I was annoyed by some so called "expert" being quoted in one of the newspapers saying that being attacked by 2 sharks is a "1 in 10 million" occurence.
This is complete and utter rubbish and armchair "experts" should study the facts before they open their mouth and ridicule themselves in newspapers.
Sure, sharks do not hunt in packs, but in the presence of another shark they are competing for prey and they are much more likely to attack and kill a person in a hurry.

I was wondering the same thing. Anyone knows?

Gizmo, where did you get that info (cage to the boat transfer)?

I go spearfishing and use it all the time. Apart from being an annoyance - (the el. shocks are not very pleasant to me either) you can't help but wonder if they work.

There was that incident in WA where a diver was taken for a 10m "ride" by a big shark, then released. Three divers grouped around the one that had a shark shield, and the shark only circled around them never to attack again. Who knows?

I've seen studies that show that shark shields won't stop a determined shark, but will deter ones that are just cruising around.

I've also seen studies that show that at longer range, sharks will come up and investigate what's making the weird zapping signal...

Some divers (myself included) won't dive anywhere near someone who has a shark shield. I prefer to remain incognito, instead of having a big dinner bell attached to me

Why not join them and dress like one while diving(not sure if you'd be able to get your high heels in there Nebs but you could always try)

I'm sorry but I don't understand your logic. This is the diver we are talking about here. Read the article you just quoted, particularly this bit:

------------------------------------
Police are investigating if Mr Clarkson was wearing a shark shield safety device at the time of the attack. It emits an electrical wave to deter sharks.

The victim's friend Don Morrison has no doubt.

"I guarantee he would have been wearing it. I think he checked it was working all the time. I'm pretty sure he would have been wearing it," he said.

Don't know, some would say a bag full of bleeding fish could be called a dinner bell too.
I've been doing this for 30 years without, always turning around, checking...like that would help me...

So still no definite statement that he had the Shark Shield with him...
