I don't think the planet cares. Why would it, it's a planet, it just sits there and spins.

Communism was pretty good at holding back a fair proportion of the world's human population. Now that communism is old hat, China is doing its best to get rich fast.

Perhaps the whole global warming movement will be good for the Earth as a whole as its kind of similar to communism.

Anyway I don't think the planet really cares one way or the other. Until we get another dinosaur killer comet or the sun swallows up the Earth, it will quite happily orbit the sun.

Mobydisc: sure the planet won't mind, but what about the birds, trees, fish and cuddly animals?

Fish don't appear to have an understanding of the greater world and the human impact, so I don't think they care. Then again, I haven't had a fish reply to me either, so I am not sure if they are refusing to answer me, or the question is beyond them.

It's a conspiracy I tells ya!

I guess it comes down to whether we believe that nature has an intrinsic worth or if its only of value when humans can either exploit or enjoy it.

Whats a 20 knot seabreeze with 25 degree air temp, 22 degree water temp and a swell breaking over a sandbank 200 meters off the a palm fringed beach if there is no one there to enjoy it?

Whats of great benefit to the Planet??

My first thought was biological control of pests.

IE a virus that targets kiters.
