After not having seen a snake in the wild for over 25 years in the last week we have had a black snake swim straight up to my 8 year old daughter at Moona Moona in Jervis Bay and I crossed paths with a tiger snake, nearly stepping on it in bare feet, on the beach track at home in Melb this morning??

Summer hasn't even started, are there more of these critters about this year or just a coincidence??

Simple question... Has anyone else experienced the same thing, particularly seeing snakes in built up areas??

Smithy
critters tsk tsk tsk, hang your head in shame.
we dont got no criiters here in Aus
But to answer your question, the season has been kind to snakes and its food availabilty over the last few years, so naturally they make hay while the sun shines with Mrs snake
I am sh1t frightened of snakes, so understand your dilema.

So

No critters.....orwight then

There's lots more critters in general where I live. Especially kangaroos. I also have an echidna living somewhere around my house which is unusual.
I'm sure there's more snakes around too but I haven't seen one yet.

Sorry critters comes from my 8yo. Heart in my mouth watching a 6' black snake swim straight at my daughter, came within about 2' of her.

The tiger snake on the edge of a Melbourne beach is a concern, lots of people and young kids use the goat tracks to access the beach, waist high foliage about 1 person wide...

Vic must be a weird place if a snake on a bushy track to the beach is out of the ordinary.

At I guess I would say the weather. My Coastal python has nailed 8 extra rats this year over the previous 4years.
She has been extremely active, I would imagine so are all the other snakes only they get a partner.

It's climate change.

I think an annual "whacking day" is in order.

OK seriously... it's been a very dry year, and it's most probably bcos their dying of thirst.
Be a sport and put a large dish of water (refill frequently) way from where you hang.

Excellent idea, like right in front of the dip stick that lives 100m up the beach...

Snakes on beach tracks are fairly standard this end of Vic. so not sure what's going on there although snake season had started early.
