Who makes your computer?

I just bought a new system.
2GB OC graphics card with a full size monitor
256GB SSD with games n regular stuff on new i7 processor.
Goes like the wind.
There is nothing i dislike but i do like the speed, the quietness, and the FPS on all my games.

It is a computer and it is white, and has a screen.

I like it because it allows me to get a forecast (most important thing in the world) and read my emails (second) and then post here (third) and get some porno. Oh hang on, that may be first....


I don't care that it does not fit in my pocket and is not the latest - as I don't work in computing and don't feel the need to have the latest updates from my friends or the media every 10 secs (I have a life) and even better it cost me nothing. I don't feel the need to pull my pud over a bit faster or a spanky new graphics card or 100Gb per month blah blah .... cos it is a tool and it works. The same as my old hammer. I don't buy a new hammer every year or even every 5yrs.
I also don't have a $1000 knife set in my kitchen like Mr Jones the chef next door has.

Oh yeah - it has Winders and I like it cos it has Word - and "Word" sounds fkn hip.

The point is, if you are not a petrolhead you probably don't care, cos it works. I find the interest in computer stuff by 'normal' people bemusing at least as it is irrelevant to what they actually use it for.

^^ Mitshi makes a sh!tload of electronic stuff, granted, but no, not all car ECU's. Holden / GMH has been Delco for about ummm - forever.
Ferrari have their in house stuff. My point exactly. You don't know and you don't really care - cos the car ECU works.

For 90% of peeps who do seabreeze and steal some MP3's then download some porn why would they be "into" computers?

I seriously don't get it. Keeping up with the Joneses crap. Why do we have to keep up with the Joneses on home AV stuff and computers and a nice coffee machine ........... BUT NOT our car stereo, or the car ECU, or the fkn breadmaker?

I like computers, i know stuff about them and i want big performance so i can do stuff i like to do.

Its like some people put muddies on their 4x4 and lift it 3 inches so they can drive in different terrain. Well i put a 2gb OC graphics and SSD in my computer for the same reasons to make it compatible with what i do.

Should I put a Motec or Haltech in the Hiace?

Sitting here posting from my home lappy - Asus F3J (cheapy)...6yo machine running Vista & has never failed, it's still very speedy!

Work - Dell Precision M4500 & dock, 3yo & also still the bomb.

Almost same setup. Acer something or other home laptop, enough for web, email and some databases. Dell Precision M4600 work laptop, less than a year old, i7 brain, SSD, 16GB RAM, 8 CPUs according to the task manager (haven't checked if it's hyper threading or not). Bloody thing just shuts down at random though, the best explanation I can think of is that it's overheating and tripping out.

Build your own machine. Source parts from msy or newegg. You can put together a beast of a machine with all the fruit very cheap. Hp Dell apple etc are a rip off imo.

Mark I have a spare PC I need to find a new home for. It's about 3yrs old. I've just wiped the hard drive and put on a fresh install of windows XP. It's a 2.4gig AMD with 1Gig of ram and a 320gig Hard drive. Keyboard,mouse, keyboard and a camera if you want it.
More than capable for web, email etc. Yours for $100 if you're interested. Might even be twisted into upgrading to windows 7. No need to pay $18 a week....Unless you really want to ! ... Nothing more to buy..PM me if you're interested :)

Why would you spend a couple of grand on a home PC? Even from Dell you can buy a perfectly good machine with all the trimmings for just over a grand tops.

The real expense in buying a PC to do stuff is if you buy name brand software. If you're just browsing for porn then the free software is fine. If you're preparing files for work then you need to be completely compatible with what they have.

The reason you buy from Dell or whoever is you get the machine fully configured and delivered to your door. If you have the time, inclination and expertise you can easily put your own machine together.

The difficulty in DIY is you can end up spending a heap of time buying components and find that you have compatibility issues. It's a pain working out the problem then deciding which incompatible thing to send back.

The same problem comes when you keep your gear for a while. Once the processor or motherboard get a bit older you have to replace all of the guts to upgrade anything. You can rent and spend the $20 a month, or buy and just live with the steadily degrading performance of your gear. Simply divide the purchase price by the number of months you want to keep the gear ($1200/60 months = $20/month).

Why do people upgrade? Henry Ford developed mass produced cars. If he asked people what they wanted they would have said give us a faster horse. I recently upgraded a heap of gear. It's smaller, lighter, more robust, lasts longer, easier to use. It's just better all round. (eg. Icom IC40 radio that you must charge before every use, no matter what. Size and shape and weight of a house brick. Icom IC41 radio can be charged once every few days in use. You can charge it in April, leave it in the cupboard, and it's still charged and ready to go in October. Fits in your pocket.)

I have had lots of PCs & laptops over the years, some good, some bad, but the reoccurring theme were the junk operating systems, windows 95/98/Vista etc etc So I bought a 27" Mac! It's crashed twice in 2 years. And when I say crashed, it went into sleep mode suddenly. I have Windows 7 at work which is OK, but it's still buggy, freezes, crashes occasionally etc

Nope, the 8560w, with the WWAN/GPS module, illuminated kb and dreamcolor, + 32GB, 2nd HDD caddy... I mostly use it for VMware.
My torrent VM is using ~26GB ram right now, cos it holds the seeds in ram, which are on a share of the host.
