Following on from the Laser Eye thread i thought I'd ask the question who opens there eyes under water? In the ocean mostly.
You see i wear contact lenses and i also am interested in Laser eye but mostly as i wanted to be able to open my eyes under water. Is this reality though not sure so just wanted to put it out there

Do you mean: have you had the laser surgery and now open your eyes underwater? or do you open your eyes under water with contacts in? Or is it a general question of how many people open their eyes under water?

I also wear contacts and if they're in I avoid opening my eyes underwater. I've done it once or twice out of necessity, and strangely enough the contacts stayed in Without them in I open my eyes under water all the time.

Always opened my eyes underwater, and a habit from earlier surfing days, usually surface with one hand above my head. Got clouted once by my own board, well maybe more than once..

I had been wearing contact lenses for more than 20 years, so I developed the reflex to close my eyes whenever going underwater. I only slipped up once or twice, and only lost one lense over the years(I think...).

I had laser surgery a few years ago, so now I can open my eyes underwater if needed.

You are not missing anything. It's only useful if you are swimming underwater looking at things, and that doesn't happen that often. Its not often you need to, and the water is clear enough to be useful. You may as well wear a mask or goggles.

That's answered my question Plus some. I was more thinkIng generally open. Stunned you can open them with contacts. I find if I get water in them I can't see anything for a bit. I was more wondering if people with out eye issues open there eyes like you see in mag adds.
After eye surgery how soon can you open them? My understanding is the flap never heals Properlly?

I always open my eyes underwater. When I duckdive I love looking up to the surface as I come up.
Just don't do it in the water a set has just gone through. Can't see much apart from sand, which isn't pleasant.
But if the water is clear it's wicked, get to see (although blurry) all the turbulence and the underwater shape of the wave etc.

I had laser surgery (PRK) I can open my eyes fine under water.

The eyes do heal up fine. My trick when I get my eyes checked is to ask if they can see anything unusual about them. I have the mega eye checks with the scans and the works. They can never tell I have had surgery.

NO. That way I don't see the sharks. And they can't see me.

No contacts, no lasik, and yes I open my eyes in the water if I'm not in whitewater (or in a pool where someone has gone nuts with the chlorine). Just by habit. Pterygiums have started developing in the last 18 months or so (I'm 33).

If you don't see it it can't see you!
Keep my eyes close so I will not have to fear sharks!

Never. Wear contacts though. Few times I have, have not had a problem. Opened the first time the other day and watched the clear water and turbulance rush over top of me. Was the highlight of my surf that morning.

Whats the best way to protect your eyes is another q. I am curious about. Sunglasses to be honest, is impossible in water sports. Contacts these days come with UV protection. Is that enough besides surfing only early mornings and arvo's when the sun is least strong?

JB I had laser surgery in 2003 best 4k I ever spent. there are no issues with your eyes in the surf after they have healed which takes a couple of weeks.

You'll never have to wonder why every one is paddling like mad to beat the rogue waves while your sitting, still blissfully ignorant because you cant see them.
