This is probably a crap topic, however, I just did an upgrade of the security on my router and was quite surprised that we now have 10 wifi devices in our home.
Two iphones, one appletv, one ipad, three mac computers, one ps3, one linux computer and the wireless switch. There is a bit of a story behind this. The linux computer is our backend TV/media Library which has been a a pet project for me over the past 4 years. It has four tuner cards that streams the TV signal to the 3 other computers and the appleTV over wifi. We have apps on the iphones and ipad that can control all these TV's. We still have have one old school tv, which my wife refuses to get rid of. I don't really watch much TV, I configure it.
Wifi has always amazed me, a great Australian invention - I hope it doesn't give me cancer.
Are you using Mythtv or something else?
I am running a few myth backends and a few separate frontends. With 6 tuners installed, I don't miss many programs!
Yahoo I've met another MythTV nut, and yeah, I don't miss much.
I just have the one backend and four front ends. The AppleTV, with mythbuntu installed on it has been quite a challenging and worthwhile project for the past couple of years. Last week I upgraded it and managed to get mythtv 0.24 running and today for the first time, I've finally managed to get WPA2 running on it, which meant I could finally upgrade the security on all our wifi devices from stupid wep to WPA2. Of course it required another hack, which took way too long to figure out - there is some bug with ubuntu hardy which requires you to run the networking at boot twice, no one understands - but it fricken works.
Oh really, I use the add skip seems to work great and then I edit the programs afterwards and transcode them. Ads suck. If I want to share them with someone else I've got some homegrown mencoder and ffmpeg scripts that transcode for iphone, ipad, stupid windows if I want. Most of the time the programs just sit there. I don't watch realtime anymore. In fact, I don't watch TV - I configure it.
I also have a 30G music library running on my backend that I stream to my frontends using MPD that I control with an app on my iphone. Sure beats stupid itunes.
Can't belive I've met someone else who knows what the hell I'm so excited about.
There's nothing illegal yet about two grown men enjoying their WiFi's and their TV's. What else is there to do when the conditions don't suit? I'm tiring of Julian Assard, conspiracies, drowned boat people and the news in general. I don't have skills in inverted welders, too old to be an apprentice - besides I did warn it was a crap topic.
Sounds like you could do with one of these too, I'm not much into tv but I love my music and I'm loving this system.
Anyone else using one of these systems?http://www.sonos.com/Default.aspx?rdr=true&LangType=1033
This is like when I was talking car audio to someone at work and mentioned the word 'head-unit'. One of the guys around me got excited and asked if there as a bum-unit to match... He thought it was hilarious and a made-up word until he ordered a new WRX and one of the options was for an upgraded head-unit.
Why are there so many guys fixated on backends. Have I accidentally subscribed to the wrong forum? ![]()
Definitely more into the front end but head unit sounds promising.
This has been a great topic by the way.
MythTV changed the whole way we watch TV instead of passively watching random shows and channel surfing when you get home, you scroll through the program guide and select the programs you want to watch. You select from options such as 'record only this showing', 'record at any time on this channel' etc. Myth Backend will record the selected programs in the background, then a process will run through the recorded program and edit out the ads, using various algorithms, which work pretty well. So when you are ready to watch TV - you watch what you want, when you want, without the ads. Realtime is for newbs
I just got back from the US and TV is so crap here. I'm really missing Celebrity Rehab - I was enjoying watching Leif Garrets progress there, Jerseylicious, Jersey Shores, Celebrity Wives, and Half Ton Teen - so much qual.
See - he is doing well.
I'm glad you asked - see, that spot on his upper nose has healed well, and he appears so much happier these days - he can thank Dr. Drew for that.
Here he is in his prime.
