My local fruit & veg guy serves up far better produce at cheaper rates....
(In brackets, is how much cheaper the little local guy is, per kilo, plus his produce is better/nicer)
Bananas & Lady finger bananas are just the starting point (about $3).... onions ($0.75+), tomatoes ($2+), capsicum/peppers ($2 to about the same).... the list goes on... He tells me they enter woolies to ensure they are cheaper.... Mixed Lettuce ($15.... Woolies really rip you off on this item....)
The local guy has local free range eggs too...
But yes, I still visit Woolies for a long list of other items....
I think it has been mentioned here before that Woolworths might make massive Dollar Sum Profits (like Billions), but it only equates to ballpark 5% (???) profit.... which is normal operating profit, or even low....
We buy most of our vegetables from a local Chinese supermarket. Prices there are quite cheap for vegies, especially of the Chinese style. We try not to buy fresh produce from the big supermarkets and use the local butchers, fruit, vegie shops and fish shops when we can. However we do go to the big chains a fair bit too.
i buy from the wogs down there road ...
Its good for kids cause you can go out the back and feed the ducks geese and chickens the shade leaves of the lettuce etc...
I live near market gardens and the produce is always better I guess for alot of people it comes down to convenience.
(the lettuce shade leaves are the most nutritious part did you know that ???!!!!
In the country there are many small time/hobby market gardeners producing outstanding fruit and veg and selling roadside. There are also friendly farmers who produce, kill and butcher lambs and calves for their "own" consumption. We grow some fruit and veg ourselves, we have chooks (eggs) and I hunt. 'Roo meat, if chosen well, is simply the best! It's now our main meat. I believe it's also very good for one's health. Foodwise, our cost of living is almost negligible.
Just be careful with weekend markets many times it's the produce that didn't sell at the fruit / veg wholesalers during the week (I did some casual work at the wholesale market for many years, and Friday was clean out day)
My suggestion is buy stuff with the outer leaves on if you can, like lettuce, cabbages, collies, carrots, beetroot its an indication on the freshness. Ive seen some VERY sus produce trimmed to look very nice.![]()
kalgoorlie-popn 34,000+ no choice but woolies,coles,IGA
no greengrocers left
all the market gardeners retired or died and thier families sold off the land for housing estates
does this sound familiar
