Scenario 1

A pit bull is loose in the neighbourhood. It is a rare spotted pit bull of which there are only 2000 left in the world. A women jogger runs past, the dog takes umbrage and in minutes the jogger has her throat taken out and is a bloody pulp on the footpath.
The rangers are called and the dog is gently herded out of the neighbourhood until nightfall when losing sight of it the rangers head for home.
The dog is then free to move on to another neighbourhood if it wishes or even return to the site of it's triumph. When you ask the ranger why? he replies. "It is their environment mate, they can do what they like"
You shake your head at the ranger and think, You're a f%$#^ idiot mate.

Scenario 2

You take your son to hospital with flu like symptoms and a rash. The doctor examines him and concludes your son has meningococcal disease. "he will be dead within hours unless he gets antibiotics" says the doctor.
Of course we will not give him any however because as any one knows that would kill the bacteria and we all know that the human body is the natural environment of bacteria.
You look at him and with barely concealed contempt state "you're an idiot mate!!!

Scenario 3

You're a farmer and your crops are being decimated by locusts. You reach for the phone and the crop dusters number but a hand stays you. "Don't do that" says ä neighbour. It is their natural environment. "Leave them be"
"go away you idiot you say"

There is a shark..............

Supposing such ‘logic’ was possible….

Scenario 1
Was the neighbourhood she was jogging in built on the grounds where this supposed ‘rare pit bull’ resides as a herd/ mass? i.e. We are now discussing the traditional ‘owners’ or life form which used to be the main life of the land.
If so, it usually goes along the lines of ‘beware jogging or being outdoors in this neighbourhood; it is at YOUR OWN RISK’ etc.

Scenario 2
You now have to prioritize within yourself, the priorities of life and bacterial life. Whichever life form you can give a fully ethically supportive and legal supportive response
(i.e.
-if you say no to giving your son the antibiotics, you are placing the doctor in a situation where it would be malpractice and he would HAVE to give your son this antibiotic;

-if you are saying that the doctor will not give it to them because THEY believe they cannot kill the bacteria; that does not medically happen. Unless you are watching an episode of House and the medical profession is portrayed like that.

-it would only be OK ethically, morally and lawfully if it was going to cause him probable brain damage or paralysis that you refused to give it to him).

Next.

Scenario 3
You’re joking right? But o-k.
You can do several things to prevent the locusts from destroying your crops; spray, cover them with whatever they do on farms etc.
I don’t wish to add to much to this; just imagine you’re a farmer and this is your only income.

Shark wise… Shark nets, tag them and have electronic beach alarms that go off when they come within X distance.
Next.

Absolutely agree
Shark nets
Beach alarms
Some rational way of dealing with a life threatening menace.
As we do with dogs, bacteria and a myriad other dangers to life and limb

ANOTHER shark thread

Laurie can we have a new Forum Category just for SHARKS?

You could have little shark icons too ~~^~o<

SHARKS - GENERAL
- CLOSE ENCOUNTERS
- MADE UP STORIES
- SHARK LOVERS
- SHARK HATERS
- GPS SHARK FARKING

Isn't it enough to listen to the media bash up every day lately without getting a daily dose of shark theory from the online shark experts too?

Oh I apologize that I come across as an 'online shark expert' when I merely responded to a few impossible theories.

As said in the locked thread. You choose to open and read what you want to, respond to what you want to and then complain because of something. It's in the general thread, and he used common sense reverse psychology ethics to make a point.

Needless to say, this is my first or second shark thread I have contributed to; you choose where you wish to make forum contributions. I suppose I mean to say, don't get 'moody' because someone has a different viewpoint on a topic.

I would love to just go surfing Toad but feel compelled to address the irrational way we deal with shark attacks.
Herding them gently away, allowing them to move on to the next beach is idiocy

Let's just KILL ALL THE SHARKS FIRST and then we can debate it forever more.

The "be nice to sharks" people may turn out to be right, but at least there will be no more shark attacks.

Here's an idea. Why don't we just take all the dead bodies from the morgue, dose them up with something to make them taste nasty and maybe a little poisonous and drop them in the ocean. Anything that eats the bodies will develop an aversion to eating people. Harvest all the useful organs first though. Maybe let the med students have a go at them too. Wouldn't want to waste anything. It could be a new kind of funeral option. "Would you like your dear departed to do something useful"

Ooh, better run it past the ethics police first.

Maybe we should also get rid of hot water taps????

The risk of dying from a shark attack anywhere in the world in 2004 was 1 in 913,200,766. You are 93 times more likely to be killed by contact with a hot water tap than in a shark attack.

Only because he rolled too. There is no way he could have crouched.

elbeau doesn't like sharks.

I was thinking about this, what does happen when you remove a top-of-the-chain predator. What does the Great White eat? Tuna? I guess we'd just have more tuna.

That figure is for the general population, but the risk among surfers and windsurfers is MUCH higher than for Joe Blow from Canberra who only swims in his backyard pool.

And the risk for windsurfers in sharky waters is higher still. Duhh.

Yes..... yes Panda,
This is the forward thinking this country needs. Now we only need to get the sharks to convert to Hari Krishna and then they will only be able to eat seaweed and jellyfish.
