Interesting, but it can be done more accurately without custom external hardware:

Plug handsfree in, stretch as much as possible, align with wind, the phone uses loudspeaker to send a known loud beep, the microphone of the handsfree picks it up, and the difference between speed of sound and measurement result is the windspeed. The setup needs to be calibrated once in no-wind conditions to determine the cable length to the microphone.

Sonic anemometers work exactly like that. I think I might do an Android app on the weekend... Hmm, might have to be a tap on the phone picked up by the accelerometer and then the microphone.

Interesting indeed, but it can be done ever more accurately without custom, external hardware.

Stick forefinger into mouth until sufficiently damp. Remove. Raise forefinger to the wind.

I have just got a new app and some how it's recording wind speeds from a yacht that's near me must have his wind gauge connected to his iPad fricken unreal!

One more gadget to add to the list but I bought a little anemeter for $22 a month ago. It seems fairly accurate and also has a thermometer too.
