and big yes. Look at Project Echelon which is well known and admitted / proven. I doubt they monitor much of Australia's telecommunications though. Well monitor is the wrong word. Everything is run through and the keywords are picked up, but the filters are set to prioritise threats to US interests.
what id like to know is where are the communist cospirators like the ussr, korea, china, or the eastern block. werent they supposed to be the bad guys in the post war period??

Most people, regimes, groups and organisations in the world are not as clever / able as you think they are.
Things that seem suspicious / nefarious are usually due to people's ineptitude / stuipidity / mistakes, not their ability to manipulate the population of the world.
It was refreshing to watch the doco 'Is Osama dead or alive' on TV last night (on some random Austar channel) and have many ex-CIA and US federal agents basically say - 'we make mistakes, big mistakes, Osama has spent 37 years in north east Afganistan / North west Pakistan evading the Russians, the Pakastaines, the Taliban, the Afgan forces, NATO, the winter weather, lack of food and now the US. He is better at hiding than we are at looking'.
We seem to believe that Americans are winners, and if they loose there must be a conspiracy behind it. I would suggest the US hasn't won any conflict off home soil since the second world war, maybe excluding the stand off over the Cuban missle crisis and Kuwait, but nothing else (including the majors of Vietnam, Korea, Balklands, Somalia, Iraq and Afganistan).
Post second world war is a very interesting period in history. It was the longest period of non-armed conflict in western Europe for 2,000 years. It also had no true world superpower, no nation had an empire. And the concept of nations based on geographical borders has never been so strong.
We look to the US to fill the void of a superpower that has always existed. The US is not a superpower. It does not export its influence over the world to any degree remotely similar to British empire, Dutch Empire, Ottoman Empire, Nation of Islam, Romans, Greeks, Gengis Khan (who was second only to Britian in terms of land area under his control), the Gauls, Charlemain, Chinese etc. etc.
People looking for conspiracies in things are searching for meaning in thier life in having somebody, somewhere in power and in control. They assume somebody or something has absolute power. Right now, that is less true than ever before.
Next time you think that hoardes of people have secretly cooperated to perform something that you can't explain, I say it is actually not the delibrate actions of co-ordinated groups of secret agents, but the inactions and mistakes of a couple of unrelated individuals.
Sorry, but there is no order in the world, no logic in the world and we make more mistakes than not.
