I've got an amp with surround sound in my lounge room - that's 12 individual wires that are outputed from my amp to the speakers.
sub woofer
left speaker
right speaker
center speaker
left back speaker
right back speaker
Some years ago I successfully wired up my back yard with 6 outdoor speakers and some heavy duty speaker wire - so it's essentially the same system as my lounge. I also managed to pull all those big arse wires from outside into the lounge room.
Got to say surround sound in my backyard is f'ckn awsome - especially on rare movie nights when I point my projector on my next door neighbors garage brick wall and will watch an awesome ultra violent movie like Machette.
Using a very crude plugging device - that I made myself - I can switch my amp to go from outside to inside. It works but is not ideal.
What I'm looking for is some sort of switch for this system that I could just flick a switch and it would switch sound from inside to outside. Are you following me on this?
At the moment my amp is connected to something that looks similar to this:

My loungroom speakers and outdoor speakers use the male equivalent to this to plug into my amp. When I'm indoors I plug the indoor male into this and when I want to switch to outdoors I unplug my indoor and plug my outdoor male into it.
It works quite well. But I'd really like to plug the whole lot together and just flick a switch.
The other big issue is that my outdoor wires are really thick. So something tiny isn't going to work. It's all working but it's just something that I've been wanting to improve on - can I?
I'd say yes, you just need a a switch with enough "poles" I'm a bit surprised you have 2 wires for each speaker, I'd expect 6 wires and a "common". Could be 6 of your wires are just connected together, if this is the case you'd only need a 6 pole switch, probably easier and cheaper to acquire than a 12 pole.
Dick Smith used to be the place to go, but I doubt you'd have any luck these days, if you have a local Jcar they should have something.

Which AMP do you have? A lot (mine included) have zone selectors.
Main Zone: Full 7.1
Other Zone: 2.1
Your sub should have 1 rca/phono cable.
Why have you got 6 speakers outside?
Assuming your speakers are 8ohms, and your amp does 4ohm/channel you could wire 2 speakers together... bin the other 2.
There's very little multichannel music around, so it's usually best to pump stereo out for music.
