Wonder how long fefore this thread gets locked![]()
Whatever you think about the fat plague there is no denying it is there. Fo me it signifies not only the depths of disconnection we have stooped to but also to the wonderment of how the heath industry is to be paid by this what is sure to knock tobacco into a cocked hat incident in our medical history.
With our level of knowledge of dietary requirments there is no excuse but then if you look at the startling array of titbits to tempt the slaivering shops of a squalling brat who is coming down off a coke high without being fed its customary all but chewed burger you realise that the war is well behind the eight ball.
I occasionally run across a young one on the beach and wonder at the fat that would run off on a spit. Little white whales.
Parents should be bloody prosecuted. It is already costing a fortune, how big is it yet to get?
Still Big Pharma must be grinning!
.
na it an't good, we as parents do have to do more...however we pay taxes and i for one want more from the governing types that could help regulate the market / media etc...to much to ask??
I tell you, there is a conspiracy here!
Do we all remember doing the food pyramid at school? You might remember it looking something like this:
It may not be immediately obvious, but take a moment to think about what is wrong with this.
What did people eat 10,000 years ago? They certainly didn't have bread, cereals pasta and rice.
This kinda goes against the "you are what you eat" philosophy. Because you can, yes you can eat fats and get away with it. However, it should be saturated fats, not trans fats.
The problem here is carbohydrates. Our caveman friend rarely ate carbs, yet they are the base of our pyramid! Why? Well lets look at who decided the pyramid is the way it is - the National Association of Wheat Growers (American). Now why would they do that? To sell their wheat products of course!
When we eat food in the form of carbohydrates, our bodies will either do one of three things in this particular order:
1. Burn off the carbohydrates immediately for energy
2. Replenish glycogen stores in the liver and muscle tissue
3. Convert the carbohydrate into fat and store for later use
So how do we stop getting fat? EASY - Stop eating carbs!
The way we should be eating is something like this:
Combined with excercise, which the little tubbies at wet and wild were doing some of, this epidemic can be easily controlled. This is really a simple lack of education issue that is powered by industry.
Diet aside, kids can have all the fun they want without leaving the couch. To me, this is the issue. It's just too easy for parents to plug in the xBox and have their kids occupied why they go about their day.
I'm only 23 so it wasn't that long ago that I was a child. I remember that when I wanted fun I had to go find it. Falling out of trees, jumping off cliffs into the river, swimming, surfing or just cruising the streets with mates on our pushies. I've got no regrets from my childhood. Every bone I broke taught me a lesson ![]()
...and not surprisingly, these days I'm in very good shape, physically.
mmmmm....call me a skeptic, but that second pyramid isn't influenced by meat growers associations / industry is it?
glenmorangie- that second pyramid is a ticket to bowel cancer and heart disease. and our ancestors ate plenty of carbs, meat was a luxury and not consumed en masse
eating too much of anything is not good for your health. excess is the problem in our society, you have to expend the energy you ingest or you get fat- its pretty simple.

right up to the point you find yourself finding cloths mid sectionon the rack (133kg _ rejected((wet and..)) so ...) i dont want want my girl'.....
I was told once that Guinness is good for you. I've been trying to disprove this theory for over 20 years now.
I have to continue my research as i have found no firm conclusion
OK - let me say up front, I am genetically disposed to having skinny genes - my father, brother, sister, and (thankfully) children were/are slim without having to do too much for it. And, yes, I did lose 10kg about 12 years ago on a diet including daily coffee/banoffee pie or cheesecake or somesuch - but I was walking everyday becoz I was Mr Mum and taking my son to playgroup/the park etc and pushing the pram (rather than sitting behind a desk all day plunking on a keyboard and thinking that a 20 min phone call was "hard work"!)
So, I'm no paragon of virtue. However, I recall once waiting at a coffee shop with my son who was about 3; there was a mother and her 3 children (about 7, 5 and 3). Each was as wide as they were tall, truly. Each had a cream bun in each hand - even the 3 year old. Each had a cola drink waiting. And as the orig poster pointed out, they walked funny ... except it's not really funny, is it? Problem is, couldn't the kids mother see that? Or was it because she was overweight herself that she thinks it's ok?
It does seem to be a generational thing. When I was a kid, we could (and did) buy 250ml cans of drink - and that was enough. Now, you're hard-pressed to find anything under 600ml. And upsizing in foods is a real thing in nearly all food sellers. Many replace quality with quantity, and it works. My old man used to rave about the size of meals at his local club: "the steaks were that big" he used to say (hold your hands in front of you about shoulder width apart!). I used to say to him, "so did you finish it?" "No", he said, "but they were that big"! Maybe I'm a snob, but if I go to a restaurant, I'd much rather have a 200g piece of good lean fillet than a 600g t-bone or rump. And those restaurants that serve even bigger cuts as a feature ...
Add that to lack of exercise and there's the problem. Just one example: people are always complaining about traffic round schools. This is because parents of today (yes, my generation) drive the kids to school - even if they only live a few hundred metres away. Hardly anyone I went to school with got driven there, even in the rain.
If you want proof of what the OP said, have a look at some archival footage of street scenes. They don't have to be anything special, just so long as you can see a crowd. If you go back to the 50s, 60s or 70s, you'll see mostly slim people (and men wearing suits and trilby hats as their everyday dress in the older shots!). Then walk down your local shopping centre ...![]()
Until someone with qualifications quotes something from a website without .com attached, this is all unsubstantiated bullpucky!
It's all very easy.
Burn more energy than you eat or you'll become a fatty.
Get the fatties off the lounge. Stop bubble wrapping them and make them go outside where the boogieman lives and make them play. Stop feeding them cornchips, maccas, coke and xbox.
Ride bikes (oh they might get hurt
) , swim in the pool (oh they might get suncancer
), run on the footy field (oh they might get tackled
), climb a friggin tree (oh they might get bit by a drop bear
).
Realistically if you are protecting your fat kids from being molested, stop the rellies coming to visit, because statistically, it's them who you are protecting them from.
Even the boys these days have bigger boobs than the girls I went to school with! ![]()
