What make is your player?
What format are your rips?

Are you sure they're .mp3 files?
A lot of CD rippers save .wav files as default.

Some mp3 players are also fussy about bitrate and frequency, 128 and 44khz are about average.

also some players won't take VBR (variable bit rate).
indicate model, and give an example of the explorer Properties of one of your rips.

My car player won't play any mp3 tracks that are in folders, yet my home system will.

I have a 2gb chip pluggued into my Nokia 2730 onto which I have copied lots of music from the PC. I think they are all in wma format.

Most mp3 players seem to accomodate wma except of course iPods. I hate those things.

The Nokia 2730 has become a very popular phone for those who like to keep things simple. It has a 3.5mm headphone jack and uses the lead as an ariel for the FM radio and also enables it to output to car radio or amplified sound system. It is like having a party in your pocket.

What is flac and can you expand on that a bit more?

^^^
FLAC stands for Free Lossless Audio Codec, an audio format similar to MP3, but lossless, meaning that audio is compressed in FLAC without any loss in quality. This is similar to how Zip works, except with FLAC you will get much better compression because it is designed specifically for audio, and you can play back compressed FLAC files in your favorite player (or your car or home stereo, see supported devices) just like you would an MP3 file.

FLAC stands out as the fastest and most widely supported lossless audio codec, and the only one that at once is non-proprietary, is unencumbered by patents, has an open-source reference implementation, has a well documented format and API, and has several other independent implementations.

From the interwebs...

Hmmmm. Maybe the interwebs aren't always correct. FLAC is more akin to WAV. The open source equivalent to MP3 is OGG, Either way, each of the OSS codecs (FLAC and OGG) are superior to their proprietary counterparts. Problem is, very few audio devices out there support either of them.

Apple is just soo common, that it's uncool... and it even sounds LoFi, but that's what you get when you commission the cheapest chinese crap you can and put it in a nice box.

Apple didn't get to number 1 with quality, they got there with fashion.

www.colorfly.eu/ has nice specs. but battery life is poor.

That's why I've added one of these into the chain, with it's own DAC:
www.fiio.com.cn/product/index.aspx?ID=28&MenuID=020301
(this sits on my desk at work or in bag on the plane, discarded while walking)

And place these at the end of the chain:
www.etymotic.com/ephp/er4.html

So except for when I'm listening while walking (rare) it's about as good as you can get, for not much extra, ~$300. That's FN cheap audiophile.

My home-away-from-home unit has one of these (5/5):
www.bowers-wilkins.net/iPod_and_Computer_Speakers/iPod_and_Computer_Speakers/Zeppelin_Air/overview.html

The iPod rocks though, especially with AirPlay and the half dozen or so music apps I use like SoundCloud and SOMA FM. It's also wafer thin and has everything the iPhone has.

If you bypass the iPood's DAC, you're sweet.

I use:
usa.asus.com/Multimedia/Audio_Cards/Xonar_Essence_STX/
usa.denon.com/US/Product/Pages/Product-Detail.aspx?Catid=f28e56fc-7d35-4cf7-88d8-f6ce5abeb128&SubId=175b9aad-12a5-4ba1-9bc0-de397b66258a&ProductId=e4945e7e-912e-43c9-bd82-5f0657787002

This combo sounds amazingly good.

In bed/travelling:
www.cowonglobal.com/product_wide/COWONJ3/product_page_1.php
www.stereophile.com/headphones/1207shure

I didn't like the Shure's originally, but their sound character changed after ~100hrs and they sound really good now.

Perhaps we'll agree to disagree...

imho they got to number 1 because of Steve's complete intolerance of crap. Their stuff just works, and keeps on working... unlike most of the competitors who go with the cheapest solution, get the firmware sort of working and flog it off with a razor thin margin.

I just had a meeting and there was a guy with a Mac Air plugged in to the projector, kept saying "I don't know why it isn't working".

I've never had an issue with a portable media player going all the way back to my Walkman.

Oh wait I did with an iPood classic, couldn't charge it.

thanks for all the replies , I was already on the road. I had to listen to 80's rerecordings all the way to Nullabor , last time I did that was the honeymoon in the 80's and it wasnt at all annoying last time
in the end we imported the CD with Itunes, then changed the file format from mpeg audio4 to mpeg audio3 format using youtube downloader/converter.
now its cranking out the tunes, but the flight from melbourne is only 4 hrs with a few hrs in the airport after i get dropped off.
kids today just know too much stuff
