I'm buying a new cheap ish digital camera: can anyone explain to me what on earth face detection is for? I have never had a problem with putting the focus box on something and having it focus on the object, why do i need the camera to identify where the subject is for me?

@ Mark_aus

In these face detect cameras they will actually track with the faces as they move (or your shaking hand moves) so it stays in focus and correctly exposed, really handy when alcohol is involved.
technology has been around for quite awhile now.

I'm quite interested in the new camera which will actually increase the sensitivity of certain areas of the sensor only, to compensate for poorly lit backgrounds, kinda like a built in HDR function.

Not sure I would want the camera just to focus on the faces if I was taking a pic of those 2 [}:)]

i know what you mean. I didn't notice the other 5 faces in this one for ages.
yes there are actually 5 other faces. No really. Stop looking at their T&A and look at the other faces. Glad we can't see their hands.

Fair chance this guys got a tripod.... heh heh...

I think we'd need to see a few different angles before deciding
