Question has seems to come up alot thru the circle of friends.
Especially when overseas!!Seems to effect all ocean users. Has this myth been outdated by a first aid kit?
whats the low down guys you ever done it? does it work or is it a fallacy?
Can diseases be transmitted thru this?
Recommended or not? Have you done it and did it prevent infection?
I'm not sure about reef cuts, I guess it depends if it is tropic coral ****, probably want some proper disinfectant going on it.
Anything else...just let the healing happen?
You hear of some nasty infections from coral cuts, I personally would rather it be looked after a little better than a quick pee...don't know much about it, but wouldn't wanna ruin a holiday by not looking after a little cut with some simple treatment.
I have have heard that urine is sterile, so may assist in washing out the cut, inplace of using dirty water.
Now I'm not a doctors' rectal probe so please obtain propper medical advice. Maybe the Doc can help, but I can't imagine washing with bong water would be helpful ![]()
maybe useing the bong apparati for its intended purpose could
relieve mental anguish of having a limb amputated.......... well
that is until the paranoid schizophrenic delusion's take over ![]()

Check out this "dude" reef cut
over in short boarding.. (scroll down) Ouchwww.seabreeze.com.au/forums/Surfing/Shortboards/Great-Lineups/?page=2
Squeezing a citrus fruit onto the cut is meant to be helpful. Think i saw that on Surfers Journal TV prog.
4 weeks before going oseas, drink a glass of water with 4 drops of tea tree oil mixed in - same two weeks later and then day before you leave -- in you're system and cuts do not become infected
Citrus juice (lime or lemon usually) or hydrogen peroxide work but hands down the best treatment for coral/reef cuts that I have found is a "Chinese Medicine" called Tieh Ta Yao Gin Liniment.
I believe you can get it through the internet but I get mine from one of the warungs at Uluwatu.
All of these options sting like **** but work (especially the chinese medicine), it looks a bit like the old mercurochrome but is absolute magic at healing coral reef cuts.
There is always some in my travel first aid kit.http://www.wle.com/products/TD89.html
P.S. I have always said it's better to be pissed off than pissed on, but each to their own. ![]()
During various military combat survival courses I've undertaken in the past we were taught that urine is quite a good antiseptic, and that to use it in the aforementioned manner is quite a good practice in the absence of anything else. Some instructors reckoned it was a good idea even in the presence of alternatives. Have used the practice quite a few times myself, out in the bush as well as after rough days diving around reefs, and have had only successful healing. That, of course, doesn't certify cause and effect.
The only real decision to made is, if it's in a hard to reach place, choose wisely who you get to piss on it for you
.
I spent an hour walking of an outer reef in New Cal a couple years ago and distroyed the missus new kite.
-Picked out the bits
-The missus squezed lime juice on them for 30 min making sure it stayed moist
-Then a 30min hot betadine soak
-Shower
-More betadine
-Neosporen and bandaids
Kept it clean, more betadine and Neosporne and was kiting 4 days later all be it a little tender.
As a side note the abouve is make a touch easier with half a litter of rum, also ensures you have some limes kicking around
What is urine?? Its part of your bodies waste
.
That said, back in the old days if you got a coral cut then it was accepted practise to have a slash on the offending area. Sometimes I think it was just a bloke thing (I just pissed on you, ha ha ha) but it did seem to ward off the infection.
Best thing is Betadine, got several nasty coral cuts windsurfing Maui and after liberal applicatiosn it not only helped kill the infection but it healed the cuts and I was still in the water everyday.
My urine is mostly beer so I just tip a stubby over any reef cuts.![]()
Have you ever tried to piss on a reef cut on your back,,,its not easy.![]()
Thats what friends are for. ![]()
It must be of some benefit because in some cultures the customary greeting is "Piss on you" for which the reply is "Piss on you too" .
Maybe I had trouble with the accent but I think that's what they say. ![]()
